Box Score 3 Laredo, Texas—The OPSU softball team took a long road trip to Laredo, Texas for a three-game series against Texas A&M International University Friday and Saturday; the Aggies grabbed a win in game two giving them their first Heartland Conference victory of the season.
After taking an 11-0 loss in five innings in the first game on Friday, the Aggies came back with determination in game two, besting the Dustdevils 4-2. Game three took place Saturday afternoon and TAMIU edged out the Aggies with a 7-5 win at home.
Rachel Thompson led off on the mound for the Aggies in game one and took the loss with 11 runs; Thompson threw five strikeouts. Kyndall Reaves threw the full five innings for the Dustdevils taking only four hits and throwing three strikeouts.
Thompson hit a double in game one and
Lilli Ward,
Madison Heathington, and
Ashly Duin each hit singles for the Aggies.
Up to pitch in game two was
Samantha Arledge who held a 4-3 record prior to Friday's match-up. Arledge notched her fifth win on the mound throwing a complete seven innings against the Dustdevils taking only five hits and two runs; Arledge punched out seven batters with strikeouts.
Arledge not only led on the mound but got the scoring going for the Aggies with single-run homer hit into left-center in the fourth inning; Arledge went 3-4 at the plate in game two.
The Aggies were strong at the plate as
Madison Heathington also crushed a homerun, this one to right-center and good for three RBI. This put the Aggies up 4-1 after six innings. TAMIU would bring in one run in the seventh but OPSU claimed the win 4-2.
Sarah Johnson took the loss for the Dustdevils pitching 5.2 innings with four runs and ten hits; Mariena Gallardo couldn't manage the save in her 1.1 innings on the mound.
It was TAMIU who swung for the fences in game three firing off two homers in the second inning good for three RBI. They collected four runs in the fourth taking the game 7-5 and led them to their second conference win.
The Aggie bats claimed 11 hits in game three.
Lilli Ward stepped up with a single in the third that brought in
Anyssa Barbosa for an unearned run off an error on first base.
Barbosa then answered with a single in the fifth which brought
Laura Trehal across the plate for a run. Thompson followed with another single bringing in both Barbosa and
Ashly Duin for two RBI.
Arledge's bat was still smoking from game two as she finished out the seventh inning with home run to right-center for one run.
Arledge pitched six innings in game three and came away with the loss with seven runs scored; she threw six strikeouts for the game. Mariena Gallardo earned the win for the Dustdevils with five runs scored and one strikeout.
The Aggies record moves to 6-13 overall and 1-2 in conference play. The Aggies will play at home this week against Eastern New Mexico. The double-header is scheduled for Wednesday, Mar. 5 with first-pitch set for 1 p.m.
