Lady Eagles Overtake Aggies in Conference Series

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 Edmond, Okla.—The OPSU Softball team was swept in a three-game, Heartland Conference series against Oklahoma Christian University Monday and Tuesday.

Monday's double-header resulted in a 6-0 shutout win for the Lady Eagles in game one and a close 7-6 victory in game two where the Aggies held the lead through four and a half innings. OC ended game three early on Tuesday with an 11-3 win in five innings.

The Aggies totaled five hits in game one, all singles. Freshman Faith Guzman got the first hit with a single to centerfield in the third inning, and Samantha Arledge and Madison Heathington each hit singles to center in the fourth. Heathington led off the seventh with another hit up the middle and Darcie Wilson knocked one to left field later in the inning.

Taylor Richardson pitched 6.0 innings for the Aggies and kept the Lady Eagles under control through the first four innings of play. OC scored one run in the first and one in the fourth and was held scoreless in innings two, three and six. Richardson, with the help of great defensive play, served up 12 fly outs and five ground outs for the game. The Lady Eagles had a big fifth inning scoring four runs off a hit batter followed by a triple and a sac fly. Shea Coats earned the win for Oklahoma Christian tossing 13 strikeouts to the Aggies.

Game two got off to a great start for OPSU with three runners scoring in the first inning. Salina Galindo smacked a double to centerfield for one RBI, and with two outs, Heathington stepped up with a homer to left field to score two. OC came through with one run to close out the first. Ashley Jarzombek also sent a big hit over the left fence for two RBI in the second giving the Aggies a 5-1 lead. Pitcher Sam Arledge put out three in a row in the bottom of the second, but the Lady Eagles were able to get two hits for two runs in the third and started closing in on the Aggies.

The score was 5-3 (OPSU) going into the bottom of the fifth when OC delivered four hits for four runs to pull ahead 7-5. The Aggies looked to make a comeback in the seventh when Wilson led off with a homer to make the score 6-7. OC brought their leading pitcher Coats in to close and she earned the save allowing zero hits and zero runs; Madison Nordyke took the win entering the game with two outs in the second. Arledge finished the game for OPSU with eight hits, seven runs and four strikeouts.

Richardson started in the circle for game three and was replaced by Arledge with one out in the first inning after giving up five hits for five runs. The Lady Eagles got by with seven runs in the first inning and gave up two to OPSU in the second walking three batters and advancing one hit by pitch. The lone hit for the Aggies came in the third inning when Faith Guzman drove a double to centerfield for their third and final run.

OC came back to score four runs in the bottom of the third and held OPSU scoreless to end the game in five innings. Richardson was given the loss for OPSU; Arledge totaled nine hits and six runs in 3.2 innings of work and threw one strikeout. Haley Squier earned her first win for OC dishing seven strikeouts and allowing one hit for three runs. The Lady Eagles now sit an even 6-6 against Heartland opponents.

The Aggies hold a 9-22 record for the season with one win in the Heartland Conference. OPSU Softball will compete at home this week in a conference series with St. Mary's University Friday and Saturday. The doubleheader on Friday will start at 1 p.m. and Saturday's game three is set for Noon.
