A Conference Win on the Road for OPSU Softball

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 Laredo, Texas—The Aggies notched a win against Texas A&M International this weekend with a 2-1 victory over the Dustdevils in the final game of a three-game Heartland Conference series. Play got pushed back due to inclement weather with games beginning on Saturday rather than Friday, as originally scheduled.

Saturday's single game saw the Aggies outscored 7-1 as TAMIU took 12 hits for seven earned runs against OPSU's starting pitcher Julia Ibarra. Ibarra stayed in the circle through six innings and threw one strikeout with two base on balls in 32 batters faced. The Aggies totaled seven hits on the day, three of which came off the bat of Darcie Wilson who went three for three at the plate and had one stolen base in the game. OPSU's lone run came in the top of the sixth inning as Sarah Gregori scored off an error by the Dustdevils' shortstop.

On Sunday TAMIU's Delainy Thompson pitched near-perfect, allowing just two hits in the seven-inning shutout victory (2-0) over OPSU. Senior Samantha Arledge took her third loss on the rubber for the Aggies, pitching a complete game and allowing five hits and one earned run on her watch. Arledge struck-out four and walked two in 27 batters faced. The two hits for OPSU both came in the top-half of the fourth inning as Brooklyne Bolton and Madison Heathington each hit singles.

The Aggies sent freshman Criselda Luna in to start game three. Luna gave up a solo homerun in the first inning but allowed just one more hit through her next 22 batters. Anyssa Barbosa tied things up for OPSU scoring Faith Guzman from third on a sac fly in the top of inning three. Barbosa then sent Guzman through again in the fifth on an RBI single to left field; that would be the final run scored for either team as Luna held off hitters through the sixth inning and was relieved by Arledge in the seventh. Luna earned her fourth win of the season and Arledge got her first save tossing two strikeouts and one groundout to end the game. The Aggies took their first conference win by a score of 2-1.

For the series the Aggies totaled 16 hits and two RBI and had one hit that went for extra bases on the weekend; a triple by Heathington in the fourth inning of game three. OPSU's pitchers held their opponents to a .253 batting average, allowing four double and one homer to the Dustdevils.

The Aggies are now 11-14 on the season and hold a 1-5 record within the Heartland Conference, sitting sixth in the rankings. The team continues their road tour with stops in Austin and Bethany before returning home for another Heartland matchup this weekend; a three-game series with St. Edward's University is scheduled for Friday, March 18 and Saturday, March 19. Friday's double header begins at 1 p.m. and game three will take place at Noon on Saturday.
