Panhandle State Softball Rained Out on Senior Day

Box Score Goodwell, Okla.—The Aggies managed to get one game in on Friday before heavy rains ruined the doubleheader with Newman University. Newman clinched a game one victory 7-5 and were up 10-0 in game two when it was called in the second inning due to a downpour.

A senior celebration took place before the rains came with eight players recognized alongside family and friends. Anyssa Barbosa, Salina Galindo, Madison Heathington, Krissy Sardelich, Sarah Gregori, Shelby Perry, Darcie Wilson and Ashby Williams each took the field for the final home series of their college careers.

Barbosa, an infielder from El Paso, Texas, was escorted by boyfriend Guerrero Garcia a former Aggie football player. Her four-years with the Aggies added up to 168 games played and a .298 batting average. She totaled 76 RBI and 11 homeruns for Panhandle State and earned three Heartland Conference accolades as Hitter of the Week. Heavily involved in campus activities throughout her time at Panhandle, Barbosa also earned honors for her work in the classroom; named to the Dean's Honor Roll three times. She will graduate in May with a degree in History and plans to attend Texas Tech Law School in Lubbock this fall.

From Chino, Calif., infielder Salina Galindo was joined by parents Luis and Eileen Galindo and brothers Syruss and Sergio. "Boogie" played in 137 games for the Aggies and holds a career batting average of .290; she has driven in 25 runs for her team. Her favorite memory from Panhandle State is all the great people she has met along the way. Galindo, a two-time recipient of the Dean's Honor Roll, will graduate this spring with a degree in Biology.

Madison Heathington has had quite a career as the Aggies' starting catcher for the past four years. Playing in 195 games, she has totaled a batting average of .319, 139 runs batted in and currently holds the school record for total homeruns in a season with 14. The Higland Village, Texas native also holds the Panhandle State record for career homeruns with 37, which puts her in the top five for career homeruns in the Heartland Conference record book. She has been named to the Dean's list four times and the President's list once in her four years at OPSU. Madi will graduate in May with a degree in Elementary Education and will attend the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs for Special Education this fall. Her parents Steven and Kelly Heathington celebrated senior day with her, along with grandparents Leonard and Dorothy Heathington and Loyd and Kay Helms.

Midyear transfer Krissy Sardelich came to Panhandle from Texas A&M-International in January. Originally, from Angleton, Texas Sardelich quickly became a great addition to the Aggie outfield. She has played in 39 games for OPSU and 190 career games. Her mother, Liz, and sister, Nicole, joined the Psychology major on the field for senior day.

Sarah Gregori, an outfielder from Riverside, Calif. Transferred to Panhandle State from Paris Junior College. She represented OPSU in 92 games over two seasons and holds a career batting average of .255 with 31 RBI. Gregori, escorted by her father Chris, looks forward to graduating in May with a Business Administration degree and a minor in Education.

The Aggies' student assistant Shelby Perry joined the seniors with parents Dewayne and Krissy by her side. During her time at OPSU Shelby represented the Aggies in both cross country and softball all four years. A hip injury brought her to the coaching side of softball and she has since supported the team in any she can. From Beaver, Okla., Perry will graduate with a degree in Psychology and plans to start her new job with Grand Lake Mental Health as a Behavioral Health Rehab Specialist.

Frist baseman Darcie Wilson came to Panhandle State from Cullman, Ala. by way of Martin Methodist University. Her parents Lanna and Richard Mosburg were present to celebrate, along with brother Ron Lively. Darcie played in 147 games in her three-season career as an Aggie and posted a .333 career batting average with 18 homeruns and 77 RBI. She holds the single game RBI record for the Heartland Conference with seven against Eastern New Mexico in 2016 and was listed as a preseason standout for 2017. The Health and Physical Education major has earned Dean's list honors three times, President's Honor Roll once and is a member of the athletics honor society, Chi Alpha Sigma. She graduates in May with a concentration in Sport and Exercise Management and will attend Texas Tech this fall to pursue a Master's in Athletic Training.

Ashby Williams was the eighth senior recognized on Friday, joined by parents Cynthia and Trever Williams and nephew Tash. A native of Amarillo, Texas, Ashby transferred to OPSU from Otero Junior College in 2014 and has been with the Aggies ever since. She was named to the Dean's list in 2014 and nominated to the fall 2016 and spring 2017 Homecoming courts.
