Goodwell, Okla.—The holiday season is not the only time for cheer on the campus of Oklahoma Panhandle State University thanks to the Aggie Cheer Team who enthusiastically celebrates ALL the seasons…football season, volleyball season, basketball season, and the list goes on.
Aggie fans are in for a real treat this year, and those who attended home football games got to see the OPSU cheerleaders in action as they introduced new stunts, cheers, and dances into their repertoire.
With more members on this year's team, the Aggie cheerleaders are able to perform more complicated and exciting stunts which they have literally taken to new heights. The team practices two to three times a week, constantly challenging each other not only to find new stunts, but to create cheers and activities to help get the crowd involved on game days.
Community involvement has also been a main focus of this year's cheer team. They started this summer by hosting an NCA Cheer Camp, and continued throughout the fall with the Little Aggies Cheer Camp, a Homecoming pep rally, Halloween activities, and offered stunt clinics for area high schools. There is certainly more to come from this energetic group.
Between practicing, cheering during home games, and taking part in campus and community events the squad stays busy year-round, all while managing outside work and class schedules and maintaining academic standards.
Cheer Coach Cassidy Christian is proud of her group and said, "I am so lucky to have the group of kids that I have this year. They are hard workers, have positive attitudes, and never complain about the hectic schedule that they keep. They care about this school and the individuals on their squad. Next year's cheer squad is going to have some big shoes to fill; especially our male members.
John Hein and Matthew (Twiggy) Blakesly have really stepped up this year and are key factors to the squad being as successful as they have been."
More is definitely merrier when it comes to cheerleaders and OPSU holds open tryouts in the spring for anyone interested in joining the Aggie cheer team; please contact Cassidy for more information. Let the Aggie spirit continue to soar!
