Aggie Softball Sweeps Sterling

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Sterling, Kan.—Aggie softball improved their record to 4-10 this weekend winning both games of a double-header against Sterling College Saturday afternoon.

Junior pitcher Rachel Thompson grabbed her first win of the season pitching a full seven innings in game one. Thompson allowed only five hits and two earned runs for the game and threw four strikeouts.

Freshman Anyssa Barbosa was first batter up for the Aggies and hammered a double down left field to start the game; Barbosa was the first Aggie to cross home plate later in the first inning, advancing off a wild throw from third base.

Lilli Ward kept things going for the Aggies with a single to open the third and would score off a batted ball to bring the Aggies up 2-0 after three innings.

With two out at the top of the fourth, Barbosa singled up the middle and then advanced to second on a stolen base. Ward hit another single which brought Barbosa in and Ward would steal second as well. Ward then reached third on a batted ball but was thrown out stretching (4-2) on her way home.

The Aggies left two on base in the fifth but came back with force in the sixth scoring five runs. Salina Galindo hit s single to open the inning and advanced to second on a batted ball. Ward stepped up with another single and Galindo was able to score on another batted ball by Sterling.

Rachel Thompson smacked a double to left and Ward advanced to third on yet another mishandled Sterling ball. Samantha Arledge reached first on a misplayed grounder and Kolbi Graves came in to pinch run; Ward would score off an error. Laura Trehal was up next and doubled; Thompson would score off a batted ball. Graves advanced to third on the batted ball but was thrown out stretching (8-4-2). With Trehal on second, Madison Heathington crushed a home run over left field on a full count and brought in herself and Trehal to put the Aggies up 8-2.

Sterling would bring in two runs in the sixth but that would end the scoring for both teams leaving OPSU with the win.

The Aggies totaled 13 hits in game one with Lilli Ward leading the team with three. Ward totaled two RBI in game one along with Trehal and Heathington who each had two RBI. Arledge led in fielding with nine putouts.

Sam Arledge took the mound for the Aggies in game two and did her job well allowing only two hits and two earned runs and throwing eight strikeouts. Arledge earned her third win of the season.

Once again Anyssa Barbosa stepped up with a double to start game two. Arledge came up to bat with two outs and hit another double for the Aggies which brought Barbosa in on a batted ball. After one inning the Aggies were up 1-0.

Three Aggies were left on base in the second inning and Sterling left two on base as well.

Thompson came up with a double to open the third and advanced to third on a ground-out by Arledge. Laura Trehal hit a SAC-fly to center to bring in Thompson putting the Aggies up by two.

Sterling failed to score in the third and neither team reached home in the fourth.

The fifth inning brought two more Aggie runners in as Thompson and Arledge both scored on batted balls.

Sterling was looking for a comeback in the sixth adding two runs to the board and cutting the Aggie lead in half; but the Aggie defense held strong and would not allow another run taking the two-game sweep in Sterling.

The Aggies totaled eight hits and four RBI in the second game. Trehal contributed two RBI and Arledge and Heathington each brought in 1 RBI.

OPSU Softball continues their road tour this week traveling to Oklahoma City on Tuesday to take on Mid-American Christian for a double-header. They will follow up with a three-game series against Texas A&M-International Friday and Saturday.
