OPSU Softball Topped by St. Edward’s

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 Goodwell, Okla.—The St. Edward's University Hilltoppers came into this weekend's series ranked third in the Heartland Conference; with the three-game sweep over the Aggies, they now sit second with an overall record of 22-11.

The Aggies dropped game one 8-3; stood their ground in game two losing by only one run (4-3); and took a tough 9-1 loss in game three.

Sophomore pitcher Samantha Arledge took the mound starting games one and three for the Aggies. She entered game two with two outs in the seventh and threw a strikeout to end the inning. Arledge totaled four strikeouts for the series and gave up 16 runs to St. Ed's.

Arledge went down on the mound in fourth inning of game three which brought Richardson in to close. The Aggies were down 8-1 after three innings of play and were unable to get things going; Arledge took the loss in game three.

Taylor Richardson was the starting pitcher in game two and held the Hilltoppers to just one run through six innings. The Toppers came up with a three-run rally in the seventh giving Richardson the loss with eight hits and four earned runs; she notched two strikeouts for the game.

Salina Galindo was the leading hitter for the Aggies batting .875 for the series and going 7-8 with one run scored. Madison Heathington and Lilli Ward were big hitters for the weekend, each driving triples and Anyssa Barbosa hit the only double of the series for the Aggies.

Five Aggies brought in one RBI each on the weekend: Rachel Thompson, Madison Heathington, Laura Trehal, Ashly Duin and Anyssa Barbosa.

Thompson finished the series with 17 putouts (16 from first, and one from third base).

The winning pitchers for SEU were Sarah Debrow in game one with seven strikeouts and three runs; and Katelyn Klug for games two and three. Klug totaled eight strikeouts and four runs in her two games on the mound.

The Aggies' record drops to 6-19 overall with one conference win. Softball is home again this week for a double-header against Cameron Tuesday, March 18 starting at 1 p.m. They follow up with a three-game conference series against Oklahoma Christian University on Friday and Saturday. Friday's double-header begins at 1 p.m.; first pitch on Saturday is set for Noon.
