Weekend Tournament Cut Short By Weather for Aggie Softball

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 | Box Score 4 Bentonville, Ark.—The Aggies were set for a five-game schedule this weekend as they competed in the 8-State Classic hosted by the University of Arkansas-Monticello, but impending weather led to Sunday's game five being cancelled.

Two games were played Friday, Feb. 13 starting with a match-up against William Jewell College (Mo.) out of the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Senior pitcher Taylor Richardson got the start in the circle for OPSU and took her second loss of the season on eight hits and nine earned runs; Richardson served two strikeouts in her one inning of play. The Aggies totaled six hits with three runs in the 13-3 loss. Short stop Ashley Jarzombek knocked in all three runs for the Aggies; two coming off a home run in the third inning.

In Friday's game two the Aggies were up against MIAA opponent Lindenwood University, also out of Missouri. The Lady Lions held a one-run lead going into the fourth inning when Darcie Wilson drove a double, good for two RBI pulling the Aggies into a 2-1 lead. Lindenwood brought in three runners to close the fourth and, with the Aggies only managing one run at the top of the fifth, the Lady Lions earned their first win of the season 4-3. Aggie pitcher Samantha Arledge took her first loss, allowing seven hits while striking out three batters in six innings.

The Aggies faced another GLVC team Saturday afternoon, taking on Drury University for game three of the tournament. Richardson started on the rubber for OPSU and went 2.1 innings before being relieved by Arledge; Arledge shut down the Panthers holding them hitless over 3.2 innings of work and dished four strikeouts. Drury's three runs scored in the third inning would be the last of the game and the Panthers would finish out with a 3-0 victory.

Game four against Northeastern State University ended in five innings with a 10-run shut-out of the Aggies giving Arledge her second loss of the season. The Riverhawks drove in five RBI on two doubles and two home runs finishing with 11 hits on the game. OPSU totaled three hits leaving five runners on base in the 10-0 loss. Arledge threw two innings and was relieved by Richardson who held Northeastern to four hits and two runs while on the rubber.

Jarzombek was the leading hitter for the Aggies scoring one run with four hits and two sacrifices for four RBI on the weekend; she had six putouts with six assists at short stop. The Aggies totaled 21 hits in four games with 14 strikeouts from the pitching crew.

OPSU moves to an overall record of 5-6 and will be on the road again this weekend as they compete in the North Texas Softball Bash in Mansfield, Texas Feb. 20-22. The Aggies will see six different teams in the tournament with two games each day. Aggie fans can look forward to the first home game of the season on Tuesday, Feb. 24 when the AOPSU Softball hosts Mid-American Christian University for a double-header starting at 1 p.m.
