Box Score 3 Austin, Texas—The OPSU Softball team earned their first Heartland Conference win in game three of a weekend series with St. Edward's University. Following two run-rule losses (0-8, 0-9) in games one and two the Aggies rallied back for a 4-1 win in game three on Saturday.
Madison Heathington hit a two-run single in the first inning to give the Aggies an early lead. St. Ed's got through with one run in the second but that would be the only run allowed by the OPSU defense and starting pitcher
Samantha Arledge. Arledge helped clinch the win with a home run in the third inning good for two RBI. The Toppers held the Aggies scoreless for the remaining four innings but suffered their first conference loss of the season. Arledge earned her fourth win pitching a full seven innings and allowing just five hits and one earned run; she tossed five strikeouts in 22 at bats. Sarah Debrow took the loss for St. Edward's after four innings with six hits and four runs. Debrow was relieved by Katelyn Klug in the fifth, the pair combined for eight strikeouts.
The series opened with a single game on Friday and freshman pitcher
Marissa Cortez in the circle for the Aggies. Cortez threw one strikeout in four innings of work and gave up eight hits for eight runs (six earned). In a dominating performance St. Ed's pitcher Debrow threw a one-hitter with ten strikeouts to take her tenth win of the season. The lone hit for the Aggies was a triple by
Anyssa Barbosa in the third inning.
Taylor Richardson got the start in the circle for game one in Saturday's double-header match-up. Richardson pitched four innings in the five-inning loss allowing nine hits and nine earned runs. SEU's Katelyn Klug earned her seventh win pitching seven strikeouts and giving up just two hits to the Aggies;
Ashley Jarzombek and
Brooklyne Bolton each hit singles against Klug.
The Aggies own a 7-19 overall record and are 1-5 in the Heartland Conference. OPSU Softball will remain in Austin for a double-header against Huston-Tillotson Monday, March 16; games begin at 12 p.m.
