Softball Racks up Two More Wins in Austin

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Austin, Texas—The OPSU softball team put two more notches in the win column Monday afternoon as they earned two wins against Huston-Tillotson University.

Junior pitcher Samantha Arledge took both wins in the circle totaling ten innings for a combined seven hits, two runs (zero earned) and 14 strikeouts. Arledge pitched a 5-0 shut-out win in game one going the full seven innings and giving up just four hits to the Rams. Senior Taylor Richardson got the start in game two and threw four innings allowing five hits and three runs (two earned) before being relieved by Arledge for the remainder of the game.

The Aggies jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning of game one, starting with a single to deep center from Darcie Wilson which brought in Salina Galindo from second base. Madison Heathington followed up with a big triple up the middle good for two RBI. The score remained 3-0 through the sixth inning. The Aggies would tack on two more runs at the top of the seventh on another long single as Galindo brought in runners from second and third on a strong hit to left field. Rams pitcher Emmili Aguero took the loss giving up eight hits for five earned runs with four strikeouts for the game.

In game two the Aggies held a 5-0 lead after three innings of play. Ashley Jarzombek led off the first inning with a double to left field and was brought home by Anyssa Barbosa on a sac fly to centerfield. In the fourth inning Barbosa hit a one-run single to score Faith Guzman, Arledge brought a runner in on a sac fly and Heathington knocked in two RBI with another big triple.

The Rams brought in five runs combined in the fourth and fifth innings with four Aggie errors contributing to their success. Tied up at 5-5 going into the sixth inning the Aggies turned up the heat and rallied for five runs in the sixth starting off with a one-run homer by Jarzombek to lead things off. With two outs Arledge stepped up with a nice triple to left field and was joined by Heathington who reached base on balls. Wilson brought in both runners with a double and was then brought home off a single by Courtney Clark. Clark stole second base and advanced to third on a passed ball; she then scored the final run of the game on an error by the Rams' first baseman. The Aggies totaled 13 hits in the 10-5 victory and gave HTU pitcher Samantha Acriba her first loss of the season.

For the day Ashley Jarzombek led the Aggie bats going four for seven with three runs for an overall average of .571 and a 1.143 slugging percentage. Madison Heathington led the team in RBI totaling four and Darcie Wilson was close behind with three RBI and a 1.000 slugging percentage. Heathington had 15 putouts at catcher.

The Aggies now own a 9-19 overall record. They will pick back up with Heartland Conference play next week when they travel to Oklahoma City for a three-game series with Oklahoma Christian March 23-24. They return home for another conference match-up against St. Mary's on March 27-28.
