Softball Splits with Sterling

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Sterling, Kan.—The OPSU Softball team stepped out of conference play this week for a two-game series against Sterling College Wednesday afternoon; the Aggies split the series earning a win in game two 3-2.

The Lady Warriors held the Aggies to two hits in the first game of the series, both singles; one from the bat of Salina Galindo in the first inning, the other from Ashley Jarzombek in the top of the sixth. The Aggies failed to bring in runners and took a 0-2 loss in game one.

Samantha Arledge was in the circle for the full 6.0 innings and did a good job of controlling the plate with nine strikeouts on the game; Arledge ended up with the loss on five hits for the two earned runs. Abreanna Landeros got the shutout win for Sterling in 7.0 innings.

Senior Taylor Richardson got the start on the rubber for OPSU in game two and went 4.1 allowing five hits for two earned runs; she tossed two strikeouts while in the circle. Allison Montion took the loss for Sterling after coming in relief for Landeros in the fourth inning.

The Aggies jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning as Arledge hit a single with two runners on base and one out; a sac fly from Brooklyne Bolton scored Galindo for the Aggies' first run of the day. Later that inning Anyssa Barbosa singled scoring Darcie Wilson for run number two.

Sterling came through with one run in the second followed by one run in the third while the Aggies were held scoreless through the seventh inning. Wilson reached base on an error by third base and was later brought home on and error by short stop. Arledge, who entered for Richardson in the fifth, finished the job in the bottom of the seventh throwing a ground out and two strikeouts in a row to seal the victory for the Aggies. Arledge earned her ninth win of the season throwing six strikeouts in game two.

OPSU Softball now holds a 13-34 season record and four wins in the Heartland Conference. The Aggies will board the busses and head to Odessa, Texas for their final games of the regular season this weekend; they finish up with a three-game Heartland Conference series against Texas A&M-International April 24-25. Friday's double-header begins at 4 p.m. and game three will start at Noon on Saturday.
