Softball earns coaching win #100 for Meghan Mulcahy in split with Southwestern Christian

Goodwell, Okla. – Oklahoma Panhandle State University's softball team presented Head Coach Meghan Mulcahy with coaching career victory No. 100 in game one, as the team split a doubleheader with Southwestern Christian University at the Aggie Softball Field.  The Aggies (8-6, 2-3 SAC) won the opener in extra innings, 2-1, on a walk-off single, but dropped the second game to the Eagles (2-2, 1-1 SAC), 5-1.

Getting the first game win had some anxious moments, as Panhandle State trailed through 4 1/2 innings, 1-0. In the bottom of the fifth, the Aggies were able to knot matters at 1-1 by plating an unearned run. With one out, Jaylinn Reyes reached on an error by the SCU thirdbaseman. Haley Neal popped out to second base for out number two, bringing sophomore Jewell Lee to the plate. Lee promptly laced a double to center off of Eagles' hurler Brianna Dow, bringing home Reyes.

Neither team could push across a run in the remainder of regulation, sending the contest to the eighth inning and the international tiebreaker (which places a runner on second base to begin each at-bat). The Aggies navigated through the top of the frame unscathed.

In the bottom of the eighth, Abby Gregory was placed on second for OPSU's turn with the bats. With one out, junior Jena Konieczka slapped a single up the middle that allowed Gregory to easily score the winning run.

Konieczka and Reyes each went 2-for-3 and scored a run to lead the Aggies' attack. Lee had OPSU's only other hit.

Panhandle starter Lindsay Jacobs went a strong six innings, scattering eight hits and permitting just one unearned run. Jacobs struck out five and walked just one, but did not figure in the decision. Kaylor Battiest tossed the final two innings to earn the victory, permitting just one hit.

In game two, the Aggies scored what would be their lone run of the game in the first inning. Down 1-0, Lee led off the OPSU half of the first with a triple down the rightfield line. Then, with two out, Konieczka singled to left to plate Lee and make it 1-1.

But that would prove to be the end of the Panhandle State offense for the balance of the game, despite getting four more hits in the game. A three-run third and another in the sixth, gave the Eagles the margin for victory.

Lee went 2-for-4 with a run in game two, as the only Aggie with multiple hits. Jacobs took the loss in the circle, allowing seven hits and four earned runs.

With Friday's twinbill at Sterling College already canceled due to weather, Panhandle State will next be in action on Tuesday (Feb.26/1 p.m.) for a home doubleheader versus Oklahoma City University.
