Goodwell, Okla—Panhandle Softball earned a series sweep over their opener last week at University of the Southwest. The Aggies played four games against the Mustangs over Feb. 1 and 2 and took home all four wins, 8-4; 6-1; 7-4; 7-2.
The bats were on fire for the game one on Friday, as
Jena Konieczka started her first at-bat with an RBI-triple, followed by an RBI hit from
Jaylinn Reyes to put two points on the board in the top of the first.
Lindsay Jacobs would keep the Mustangs at bay from the pitching circle until they would take the lead in the bottom of the fourth, plating all four of their runs in the inning. But, the Aggies answered back in the top of the fifth, adding six runs as the Mustangs walked in a run off a bases loaded hit-by-pitch, followed by a 3-RBI triple from
Kayli Grove, and an RBI single from
Jewell Lee.
Kaylor Battiest came in at relief and the Mustangs would not be able to close the gap and the Aggies took the win, 8-4.
The first inning of game two remained quiet, but the Aggies plated a run in the second off an RBI groundout from
Haley Neal, and the Mustangs answered back in the bottom of the third to tie the score. The Aggies exploded in the seventh, scoring six runs off a 3-RBI double from Konieczka, an RBI single from Grove and an error by the Mustangs would score Neal, bringing the game-ending score to 6-1 in favor of the Aggies. Battiest would earn the save as she pitched a no-hitter through 4 innings.
To start Saturday morning's game three, the two teams went scoreless through the second and the Aggies added four runs in the top of the third with a grand slam from Konieczka. USW plated two runs in the bottom of the inning, but Panhandle answered back with two runs of their own in the top of the fourth with another 2-RBI double from Konieczka. In the fifth, the Aggies added a run in the top of the inning while the Mustangs added two in the bottom, bringing the score 7-4 still in favor of the Aggies. The Mustangs would be unable to make a comeback and the Aggies would walk away with the win.
Game four began with the Aggies getting a run on the board early as
Karah Ortiz popped a sac-fly to left field. USW answered back with a run in the bottom of the inning, but the Aggies would get back on top in the second with an RBI-double from
Jordan McEntee. Ortiz brought three more runs in the fourth off a 3-RBI triple to center. USW plated a run in the bottom of the inning and Battiest would come in to pitch for
Emily Worley. McEntee lead off the fifth with a double to left and was brought in to score by a single from Lee. The sixth saw another run off a sac-fly from Konieczka and the Aggies would end the series with their fourth win, 7-2.
The Aggies are now 4-0 on the season.
