GOODWELL, Okla. – It was a tale of two very different games for Oklahoma Panhandle State University basketball teams versus visiting Wayland Baptist University, but with both ending in defeat for the hosts at Anchor D Arena. The Aggie women fell to the NAIA No. 5-ranked Flying Queens, 100-57, and OPSU men lost a hard-fought, 75-66, decision to the Pioneers in the Sooner Athletic Conference doubleheader.
The youthful Panhandle State women simply had no answer for the depth, size and experience of the WBU ladies. The Aggies saw the Flying Queens register seven double-figure scorers and were out-rebounded by a margin of 61-30. That disparity on the glass gave WBU 54 points in the paint and 20 second-chance points.
OPSU's offense was paced by junior guard
Laura Moya Demures. The Aggie's Spaniard was 6-for-13 shooting, resulting in 15 points. She also dished off two assists.
Vanessa Gonzalez is the only other Panhandle player to reach double digits with 11 points. Gonzalez topped the team by draining a trio of treys of her four field goals made.
Freshman
Shay Audrain added nine points and four rebounds, along with eight points from
Cassia McCaskill.
Skylar Cleavinger booked six points.
Senior
Lowendie Laporal had a team-leading seven rebounds for OPSU. McCaskill and Cleavinger had five caroms, apiece.
McCaskill also passed off a team-best six assists.
In the men's nightcap, the Aggies and Pioneers put on a great show for the fans. In the first half alone there were seven ties and 12 lead changes. WBU took the lead for good at the 18:35 juncture, but the game was within single digits for all but 57 seconds of balance of the game.
Panhandle's largest advantage came with 3:24 remaining until halftime.
Brett Williams hit a free throw, completing a three-point play, to put the Aggies ahead, 33-26.
Freshman
Auston Chatman notched his second double-double of the season, thanks to a season-high of 21 points to go along with his 11 rebounds. Chatman hit 8-of-19 field goal attempts and made good on 3-of-7 three-balls (half of the Aggies treys made). He had both of the team's blocked shots and made a pair of steals.
DK Sumo IV was 5-of-12 shooting on his way to a 17 point performance. Sumo was 6-for-7 from the free throw stripe. He had game high totals in both assists (6) and steals (6).
Williams and
Daniel Holyfield added eight points each.
