GOODWELL, Okla. – The Oklahoma Panhandle State University softball team had a breakout doubleheader sweep over Southwestern Christian University, winning the Sooner Athletic Conference twinbill by scores of 13-3 and 10-0 at Aggie Field. The wins by the Aggies (10-16, 2-5 SAC) were the first in conference for OPSU after opening league play with losses to nationally-ranked USAO and OCU.
And Head Coach
Chad Kerr's team came on like gangbusters, unleashing an offensive explosion on the Eagles. In the doubleheader, Panhandle rolled up 23 runs, 17 hits, had three doubles, a triple and three home runs, drew six walks and only had four batters strikeout. The Aggie pitching staff scattered 10 hits and amassed 14 strikeouts in the two five-inning games (shortened by the run rule).
"Those were good wins," Kerr said. "All aspects of the game were on for us today: hitting, pitching, defense and base running."
For the afternoon,
Kinzie Jones put together a productive day. Jones hit .667 (4-6) and drove in seven runs. She had two doubles, a triple and a home run to her credit (good for a 1.833 slugging percentage for the day) and scored four runs.
Junior infielder
Jaylinn Reyes also kept her hot bat going, hitting a combined 3-for-7. Reyes had a double and crushed her fourth homer of the season in game one. She collected three RBI in the set of games.
Chrislyn Dovers,
Brissa Rivera,
Camryn Pryor and
Caitley Adams each had two hits on the day. Pryor had the Aggies' third homer of the day in game one, as well.
In the opening game, freshman
Sarah Conley picked up her fourth win of the year, with the complete game. Conley struck out six Eagles and walked just one in her 5.0 innings of work.
Redshirt freshman
Rebecca Ortiz, a product of Goodwell High School, earned her first collegiate victory in game two. Ortiz – making just her second start – threw the shutout and permitted just two hits. Ortiz struck out eight and walked four, facing just 22 batters.
Panhandle State's weekend series scheduled at Southwestern Assemblies of God University has already been postponed due to the threat of severe weather in Waxahachie, Texas. No new date had been announced for the series.
