Aggies Sweep Season Opener

HOBBS, NM - The Oklahoma Panhandle State softball (4-0) team sweeps the University of the Southwest Mustangs(0-4) for their first series win of the year. Game one of the day was highlighted by a ten-run top of the 7th for the comeback win against the Mustangs.

The Aggies saw an exceptional all-around performance from the top to the bottom of the lineup. Sarah Conley and Kenley Yocom headlined the Aggie pitching staff for the day.

After a red-hot day in day, one of the four-game series, the Aggie bats seemed to have cooled off somewhat. However, the Mustangs would come out in game one to avoid a series sweep. Going on to score four runs in the first three innings while the Aggies struggled to get baserunners. The Aggies would not go down without a fight as they would put up ten runs in the top of the seventh to get their first lead of the day. They were getting started off the red hot bat of Yaya Jones with a lead-off single in the inning. Freshman Rylin Baker would come in in the bottom half of the inning to secure the win for the Aggies.

Sophomore Kenley Yocom would go the distance in game two of the day getting the winning decision in a more Aggie like performance. The Aggie hitters settled in at the plate, belting numerous extra base hits in the contest. Aggie Upperclassman Adams, Jones, and Grove gave the Aggies the lead early in the contest. A lead thy would never relinquish as they go on to win 6 to 1.

Game 1
The Aggies look to complete the series sweep of the University of the Southwest Mustangs as they take the field on day two of the four-game series. The Aggies would experience an early four to nothing deficit and only managed their first run in the sixth inning. Determined not to drop their first game of the year, they would bounce back in the top of the seventh and scratch ten runs across.

Sarah Conley (1-0) would make her second start in as many days for the Aggies. Conley might not have been as sharp as she was in her previous outing, but she was still able to minimize the damage when it mattered most. Conley would exit the game in the third inning for freshman Isabel Ray (1-0). Ray would hold off the Mustangs long enough for the Aggie bats to get hot. After the Aggie ten-run inning, Ray would take a seat as Conley would come back in the game and later Rylin Baker.

The Aggies would total twelve hits in the game for ten RBIs. Five Aggies would record at-least two hits in the game. Senior outfielder Kayli Grove would lead the offense in hits with three while also being directly responsible for five of the Aggies' eleven runs. Junior Yaya Jones would provide the spark for the Aggies whenever they needed it. Accounting for another three, Aggie runs by herself.

Game 2
The Aggies had their eyes set on a series sweep, coming into game two of the day and game four of the weekend. Determined to make up for a late-blooming offense in game three, the Aggie offense came out ready to end things early. They would notch the first run of the game off the bat of Kinzie Jones as she hit a sacrifice fly to right field.

Kenley Yocom (1-0), following the likes of Conley, would also make her second start in as many days. Once again, taking a no-hitter deep into the contest. Throwing a complete game and allowing four hits on twenty-five batters faced seven strikeouts.

Senior outfielder Kayli Grove highlighted the Aggie offense, who would go four for four in the second game of the day. She would not be the only one to have a crooked number in the hits column, as Kinzie Jones, Tatum Trester, Taylor Blanton, and Caitley Adams also had at least two hits in the contest. A game that saw six extra-base hits that were instrumental in the Aggie win and sweep.

The Aggie hitters totaled sixteen hits in game two. In addition, showing real patience at the plate as they managed only sixteen strikeouts over the four-game span. A key characteristic as the Aggies participates in one of the top softball conferences in the nation hosts two top-5 NAIA softball programs.

Aggie softball hits the road again as they travel to Allen, Texas, to compete in a five-game tournament starting Friday, February 11th. They are competing against Bellevue University, Columbia College (MO.), McPherson College, Tabor College(Kan), and Bethel College (KS).
