Aggies sweep (RV) Rams

GOODWELL, Okla. - The (RV) Oklahoma Panhandle State softball team swept the two-game series over the (RV) Texas Wesleyan Rams.

The first game of the series saw a dominant outing once again from the Aggie ace, Sarah Conley. Along with timely hitting and key defensive stops, the Aggies would take the first game of the series 6-3.

Game two saw the Aggies pull out all the stops and solidify themselves as a top-3 team in the Sooner Athletic Conference. In the 11-5 win over the Rams, two Aggies would record at least three hits and two would record at least two. The Aggies made great use of the space in the outfield as nine of their fourteen hits would go for extra bases.

Game 1

After having to postpone the first two games of the series the Aggies were itching to get back on the diamond and prove their dominance. The Aggies would outhit the Rams for their 22nd win of the season.

Junior pitcher Sarah Conley (8-4) would be the only pitcher the Aggies would need in the contest. Conley would allow only two earned runs on five hits and strike out four in her seven innings of work.

The second-best offense in the Sooner Athletic Conference was ready from the start to face the Rams' pitching. The Aggies would make use of the long ball early as senior shortstop Kinzie Jones would launch her third home run of the season for a two-run home run in the third to tie the game. Kaitlyn Lord would start another rally for the Aggies in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI single. Being brought around to score by Phyzlan "Yaya" Jones to give the Aggies the lead.

With the Rams tying the game up at three in the top of the fifth the Aggies headed to the plate with the bulk of their order ready to do damage. The Aggies would start the bottom of the fifth with three consecutive baserunners to load the bases up. Kenzie Monroe would be hit by a pitch to give the Aggies the 4-3 lead. An errant throw by the Rams' third basemen would allow the Aggies to extend their lead 6-3.

That would be all she wrote for the Rams as Conley would face the minimum in the next two innings to earn her eighth win of the season.

Game 2

With their eyes set on the top-25, the Aggies were dead set on sweeping the (RV) Texas Wesleyan Rams. Game two of the day showed that determination at its best.

Sophomore Kenley Yocom (6-4) would make it through three and two-thirds innings before making way for Rylin Baker. Yocom allowed only two earned runs on six hits in her outing while striking out one.

Baker would be the first out of the pen for the Aggies. Going two and a third innings without allowing a single run before Sarah Conley came in to close out the game for the Aggies.

The Aggie bats would once again show their prowess at the plate in game two. Refusing to trail early the Aggies would put up nine runs in the first three innings. Lord would lead off the bottom of the second with a triple. Followed up by nine consecutive Aggie baserunners, Tatum Trester (double) and Kinzie Jones (home run) would also record extra-base hits in the inning as the Aggies take a 7-0 lead.

Jones and Adams would not be satisfied with the lead in the bottom of the third. Jones would lead off with a double before scoring off an RBI triple from right fielder Caitley Adams. Freshman Haley Saur would get in on the action with an RBI single in the inning as well. The Rams would scratch a couple in the top of the fourth to shrink the gap between them and the Aggies.

Kayli Grove would knock her team-leading ninth triple of the year to get the Aggies back on the board in the bottom of the sixth. Lord would drive a ball past the third basemen to score Grove from third to make it 11-4 Aggies. Conley would enter in the top of the seventh to shut down the Rams batters and secure the Aggie win.

Panhandle State softball hits the road for another conference series Wednesday, April 13th in Langston, Oklahoma against the Langston University Lions.
