Aggies Handle Drovers Via Opportunistic Offense

GOODWELL, Okla. — The Oklahoma Panhandle State men's soccer team (5-3-4, 1-2-2 SAC) picked up its first conference win and remained undefeated at home with a 2-0 shutout over Science & Arts (5-4-4, 1-3-1) on Friday afternoon.

Posting its fifth shutout in six tries at Anchor D Stadium this season, the Aggies' defense limited clean looks, and goalkeeper Olai Caicoya (2-1-3) was exceptional with eight saves for his second solo shutout of the year.

Despite losing the battle in shots and shots on goal, the Aggies capitalized on their limited opportunities by managing their way behind the USAO defense on multiple occasions.

So it was in the 37th minute of a scoreless match, when Martin Ponce flipped the field with a deep ball to a sprinting Alami Senhaji, who with one lightning move was all alone for the game-winning goal, the first such score out of three goals in his career. Ponce's highlight assist marked the defender's first point of his season.

OPSU extended its lead after halftime, as Ayoup Bader provided a perfect pass on a through ball to Calum Murphy who finished off the strike. Murphy, whose goal was his fourth, became the third Aggie this season (Othman Gherab, Bader) to reach double-digit points.

The two scores proved enough for Panhandle State as it masterfully limited the Drovers' chances down the stretch, not allowing a single shot attempt from the visitors over the final 13 minutes of game time.

Murphy took three shots, all of which landed on target to lead the Aggies. Overall, five of the seven OPSU shots were on goal.

What's up next: OPSU looks to keep momentum on its side when it travels to play the conference leader, No. 25 John Brown (8-3-1, 3-1 SAC), on Oct. 18.
