Goodwell, OK — The Oklahoma Panhandle State University softball team opened its four-game road series against Wayland Baptist University with a split doubleheader on Friday, grabbing a thrilling extra-inning win in Game 1 before narrowly falling in Game 2.
Game 1: Aggies 2, Wayland Baptist 0 (8 innings)
A clutch performance from Marin Jacobs in the circle and at the plate lifted the Aggies to a dramatic 2-0 win in extra innings. Jacobs tossed a complete-game shutout, allowing just four hits while striking out four to improve her season record to 13-5.
After seven scoreless innings, OPSU broke through in the top of the eighth. Haeley Vasquez reached and came around to score on Jacobs' RBI double to center field, giving the Aggies the lead. Mia Cavallini followed with a single to left to bring Jacobs home and extend the lead to 2-0.
Offensively, the Aggies scattered 10 hits, with Jacobs, Summer Marron, and Kaylynn Du Preez each collecting two. The defense was flawless behind Jacobs, committing no errors to preserve the shutout.
Game 2: Wayland Baptist 5, Aggies 4
Despite a strong late-inning push, the Aggies fell just short in Game 2, falling 5-4 in a back-and-forth contest.
Wayland Baptist took advantage of a pair of OPSU errors in the second inning to jump out to a 3-0 lead. The Aggies responded in the third, scoring three runs of their own. Vasquez drew a bases-loaded walk to plate the first run, followed by a fielder's choice RBI from Marron and a run-scoring single from Jacobs to tie it at 3-3.
Wayland retook the lead with single runs in the fourth and sixth innings, making it 5-3. Marron delivered again in the top of the seventh with a clutch RBI single, scoring Vasquez to trim the deficit to one. But the Pioneers held on to secure the win.
Marron and Jacobs once again led the Aggie offense, combining for four of the team's seven hits and driving in three runs.
