SAN ANTONIO — After dropping game one on the road Saturday, the Oklahoma Panhandle State softball team (0-4) was in good position to earn a split at Texas A&M San Antonio (2-0), holding a 3-0 lead in the nightcap before the Jaguars came back and eventually walked it off to secure the doubleheader sweep.
The doubleheader marked the inaugural games played by the home team on its new turf softball field.
Game 1: The Aggies struggled to get much going at the plate, and errors piled up as TAMUSA pulled away for a five-inning, run-rule win.
Marin Jacobs (0-2) went four-plus frames in the circle, with just three of the Jaguars' runs charged to her.
Gracie Lankford swiped a pair of bases in the opener, and she was joined in the hits column by
Haeley Vasquez and
Flora Moreno.
Game 2: Four straight scoreless innings from
Jordan Johnson (0-2) allowed the Aggies to grab an advantage and build on it in the middle frames as they looked to pick up their first win.
In the top of the third,
Liliana Vaquera was hit by a pitch before stealing second to kickstart the lineup.
Erin Hornback later singled, and
Summer Marron slapped a two-out, run-scoring single to right field to give the Aggies a 1-0 lead.
Still leading 1-0 in the fifth inning, OPSU added on with a triple over the outfielders' heads in left-center by Hornback, which drove in
Haley Emmerson.
Aaliyah Dang-Gutierrez promptly plated Hornback with a single through the left side, handing the visitors a 3-0 cushion.
TAMUSA came back with three base hits to score two runs in the bottom of the frame, and it tied things at 3-3 in the sixth on an Aggie miscue. Panhandle State could not strike in the seventh inning, leaving no margin for error as the Jaguars walked it off in the seventh.
What's up next: OPSU looks to regroup at the University of the Southwest (0-0) for a series running Feb. 6-7.
