Nunez Shines in Grand Fashion as OPSU Secures Home-Opening Split

GOODWELL, Okla. — On a home-opening Saturday in which the Oklahoma Panhandle State baseball team (2-4) paid homage to former head coach and Aggie Hall of Hamer Carroll Gribble by debuting a commemorative patch on their hats, Genesis Nunez had an otherworldly day at the plate to help OPSU to a split of its doubleheader versus York University (1-4).

Nunez finished his day with six hits, completing an extended cycle by notching two doubles, his NAIA-leading fourth triple of the season, and a grand slam that proved to be the difference in the nightcap.

His efforts highlighted a nice day for Panhandle State's lineup, as it fell 11-6 in the opener before securing a 10-6 win in the second contest.

Game 1: The Aggies started strong, scoring in each of their first four turns at-bat and in five of their first six innings.

An error, a walk, three singles and a triple from the visiting Panthers in the top of the fourth frame erased a 4-2 lead for the Aggies, as York struck for five runs to take a 7-2 advantage.

Trailing 8-5, the bottom of the sixth inning held promise for OPSU as it began with a walk by Nunez and an RBI double from Zoilo Pimentel. The Aggies went down in order after Pimentel's two-bagger, however, and the visitors scored thrice in the seventh to seal the game.

Nunez had three hits, including a double and triple in game one. Pimentel, Devin Lopez and Neugyen Culmer all also had multi-hit performances.

Game 2: Both pitchers opened the nightcap strong with two scoreless frames, as OPSU starter Miguel Montano (1-0) collected five strikeouts during that stretch.

The Panthers got a run in the third inning, but the floodgates would soon open for the Aggie bats.

Jim Paredes, Israel Gandara and Nunez each singled to start the bottom of the third, sparking a three-run inning for the hosts. Then in the fourth, Alejandro Hernandez and Gandara both walked while Culmer singled, bringing Nunez up to the plate with one out and the bases loaded. Nunez homered to right for a grand slam, opening up a 7-1 Aggie lead.

York hit a two-run homer in the fifth, but Montano was able to complete the inning as the pitcher of record, ending his day with eight strikeouts and just two earned runs allowed.

Panhandle State got those runs back in the next half inning, with Paredes, Gandara and Nunez driving in runs to expand the lead to 10-3, making the Panthers' runs in the sixth and seventh innings harmless.

Nunez, Pimentel and Gandara each collected two-plus hits in the nightcap, while reliever Matao Laguna closed the door in the seventh inning.

What's up next: Panhandle State concludes its series with York with a single game on Sunday at 12 noon.
