GOODWELL, Okla. — The Oklahoma Panhandle State (5-35, 3-23 SAC) scored 19 runs Sunday at Jim Quimby Field, but they were not enough as sloppy play in the field doomed the Aggies in the series-opening doubleheader against Langston (12-18, 7-17).
Game 1: The Aggies set a season high with 15 hits for a season-most-tying 10 runs, but porous fielding provided extra outs and extra bases while proving costly in a 15-10 defeat.
Only eight of Langston's 15 runs were earned, including just two from a tough six-run first inning for the Lions that saw OPSU uncharacteristically commit four errors.
Panhandle State battled back, plating the first three Aggies up to bat to cut into the deficit, 6-3, after one.
Aaliyah Dang-Gutierrez and
Summer Marron notched an RBI double and single, respectively, in the frame.
OPSU continued to struggle defensively throughout the day, as Langston scored in four of the next five innings, headlined by a four-run third inning.
The Aggie lineup continued to string together solid at-bats, matching the Lions with four runs in the third to make it 11-7.
Cassidy Stanhope and
Haeley Vasquez notched run-scoring singles, while
Kaylee Jund had an RBI double and
Gracie Lankford brought in a run with a triple.
Jules Leach made it 11-8 in the fourth inning with a triple, on which she scored due to a throwing error. Though Langston was back in front, 15-8, heading to the bottom of the seventh, the Aggies plated two more following Vasquez' leadoff double.
Vasquez went 3-for-3 in the opener, Leach was 3-for-5, and Gutierrez had a multi-hit game to pace OPSU.
Game 2: The Lions put up multiple runs in every inning in the nightcap as they jumped out to a 10-0 advantage going into the bottom of the third.
Panhandle State responded with its finest offensive inning of the season, plating eight runs to trim the LU lead to two, 10-8.
The bottom of the third featured six Aggie hits, including RBI base knocks from Vasquez,
Mia Cavallini,
Reighley Wilkerson and Jund. Marron's sacrifice fly brought in the eighth run.
Langston quickly went back to work at the plate, ending the game early with a 17-9 run-rule win. Cavallini's solo home run to left-center in the bottom of the fourth accounted for the Aggies' final run.
Cavallini, Stanhope and Wilkerson each had two hits in the nightcap.
What's up next: OPSU concludes the series with a doubleheader starting at 12 noon Monday.
