May 5, 2026
MILL SPRING, N.C. Eva Johnson continues to carve out a remarkable legacy for Oklahoma Panhandle State University's Equestrian Team as she competed at the IHSA National Championships in Mill Spring, North Carolina, the most prestigious stages in collegiate horse showing.
Johnson's appearance at nationals is historic in multiple ways. She is just the third student in OPSU history to qualify for the IHSA National Championships, and notably, the only rider to achieve this honor twice and in back-to-back years.
The IHSA National Championships brings together the very best collegiate riders from across the United States and Canada. With more than 500 competitors representing over 40 colleges and universities. Competition is fierce, and simply qualifying is a significant accomplishment. From Region 7, Zone 2, only five colleges advanced riders to nationals, making Johnson's achievement even more exceptional as she represents not only her school but her entire region.
Johnson rose to the challenge in the reining competition, earning an impressive 11th-place finish. This result not only secured her position at the show but also ranked her 11th in the nation for the year, an outstanding accomplishment in such a deep and competitive field.
Head coach Kacey Ward praised Johnson's journey and work ethic, stating, "Watching Eva grow and achieve so much has been incredibly rewarding. Her work ethic and dedication to the sport are unmatched, and I am beyond proud of everything she has accomplished. It has truly been an honor to coach her and to share in a historic moment for OPSU. As she prepares for her final year at the collegiate level, I look forward to continuing this journey and hopefully adding even more milestones to her already impressive career."
What's up next: As the OPSU equestrian team reflects on another phenomenal season, the focus has already shifted toward the opportunities that lie ahead. With several riders on the cusp of qualifying for regionals in 2027, the first of three critical steps toward the national championships, the team is poised to build on this year's momentum. Their continued dedication, growth, and competitive drive set a strong foundation for what promises to be an exciting and successful season next year.
