Kirongo Finishes Fifth for Aggies at Tabor Meet

Marion, Kan.Freshman Philip Kirongo earned a fifth place finish for the Panhandle State men's cross country team as he competed in a field of 58 runners Friday afternoon at the Tabor College Invitational.
Kirongo, an international student from Kenya, clocked an 8-kilometer time of 28:48.28 on the Cottonwood Point course at Marion Resevoir. Not far behind was teammate Calvin McKinney, a junior transfer out of Arkansas-Fort Smith; McKinney came in at 15th place overall marking a 30:02.34 time for the Aggies. Twins Aaron and Cameron Hammett finished 39th and 41st respectively with times of 33:21.05 and 33:44.90, followed by Jacob Mireles who placed 44th at 34:36.47. Bryce Cathey also completed the 8K course for the Aggies finishing in just over 37 minutes, coming in at 51st place.
The Aggie men brought an average time of 32:06.61 for a fifth place team finish among seven teams competing. McPherson College came in first averaging 28:52.17 followed by Dodge City, Tabor, Hesston, Panhandle, Oklahoma Wesleyan and Bethany. Wesleyan's Nathan Tripp notched a first-place finish individually with an 8K time of 27:34.49.
The Panhandle women's team also took part in the Tabor Invite and took 6th as a team with an average time of 29:34.06 in the 5-kilometer race. Leading the pack for the Aggies were juniors Jasmine Brown-Jutras and Danielle Villarreal with times of 26:45.57 and 26:46.16 respectively; Brown-Jutras came in at 33rd with Villarreal on her heels at 34th. Freshmen A.J. Husband and Sunaed Ramirez also ran a tight race placing 39th and 40th respectively; the pair came through less than four seconds apart with Husband marking 31:17.93 and Ramirez taking a time of 31:21.00. Senior Shelby Perry finished 42nd timing 31:39.62 for the Aggies.
Dodge City earned the women's team title averaging 21:09.17; they also owned the top two spots individually as Mattie Swisher ad Lacie Siruta took first and second place overall with respective times of 20:19.51 and 20:19.94. The women competed in a field of six teams and 42 runners with Tabor College placing 2nd followed by McPherson, Hesston, Oklahoma Wesleyan and Panhandle.
Both Aggie teams will have a week to prepare before their next meet on Oct. 7. The West Texas A&M Buffalo Stampede will take place at The Range in Canyon, Texas starting at 5:30 p.m. The men will run an 8K, while the women will run a 6K course.
