Kirongo Keeps Up with Fast Field of Runners

Amarillo, TexasThe Aggie cross country teams competed in the West Texas A&M University Buffalo Stampede and freshman Philip Kirongo notched his best time of the season for a 12th-place finish in a field of 29 runners.
Kirongo marked an 8K time of 28:00.1 minutes to finish first among Aggie runners. Calvin McKinney clocked 31:11.4 followed by Aaron and Cameron Hammett with times of 31:31.4 and 33:41.9 respectively. Jacob Morales, Bryce Cathey and Firas Ghasouani also finished the 8-kilometer race for Panhandle. The Aggie men took fourth place with a team average of 31:40.7.
Other teams competing in the men's race were: Eastern New Mexico who finished first with a team average of 27:31.0, New Mexico Highlands who earned second place as a team averaging 27:38.9, and host team, West Texas A&M who finished third with an average team time of 28:38.7. Kurui Collis of Highlands was the first runner to cross the finish line marking a speedy 25:21.3.
The Eastern New Mexico women's team led the pack of 25 runners in the 6-kilometer race claiming both the team title and the first place individual title. The Greyhounds averaged a team time of 23:47.6 with runner Melina Gryschka clocking a 6K time of 22:48.3 for the first-place finish.
Panhandle State earned fourth in a field of four women's teams with an average time of 36:01.0. Junior Danielle Villarreal was the 20th runner to complete the race, and the first Aggie across the line; Villarreal marked a time of 30:33.1 and was followed by Jasmine Jutras-Brown who clocked a time of 34:02.6 to finish 21st. AJ Husband, Sunaed Ramirez and Brileigh Murphree and Shelby Perry rounded out the field for the Aggies.
The Aggie cross country teams will have a little time to prepare for their next competition; the Heartland Conference Championship Meet will take place on Oct. 22 in Mansfield, Texas.
