Gabriel Gonzalez

Gonzalez was hired in March 2025 and enters 2026 in his second full season as the OPSU head men’s soccer coach.

Head Coaching Highlights at OPSU (Through One Season)
In the 2025 season, Gonzalez’ team and athletes compiled:
  • One Second Team All-SAC selection
  • One SAC Offensive Player of the Week
  • Three CSC Academic All-District Team members
  • Four NAIA Scholar-Athletes
  • One SAC Tournament appearance
Gonzalez led a successful 2025 campaign for the Aggies in his first season as a head coach at the collegiate level. Under his direction, OPSU got off to a fast start by tying the program’s best record through six matches at 4-1-1. Gonzalez’ team was stout defensively, as it set program records for the most consecutive home shutouts (four) and fewest goals against average (1.35). The Aggies also made the SAC Tournament, finishing with a 6-6-5 record and having one player recognized as Second Team All-SAC.

Before OPSU
Previously, Gonzalez spent the 2023 and 2024 seasons at Texas A&M University – Texarkana as an assistant coach for both the men’s and women’s soccer programs. He played an instrumental role in leading the program to new heights, including its first-ever winning regular season with a 9-8-1 overall record and a 7-5-1 finish in the Red River Athletic Conference in 2023.

In that 2023 season, he helped secure the men's first RRAC tournament berth in three years, which was followed up by the team’s highest qualifying seed (sixth) in 2024. The back-to-back tournament appearances were accompanied by TAMUT men’s soccer achieving the highest team GPA in program history (3.40) in the 2023-24 year.

Gonzalez has a strong resume as an assistant women’s soccer coach, too, having mentored 12 women’s all-conference selections (including five first-team and four all-freshman honorees), as well as one Champion of Character recipient.

Gonzalez takes pride in his ability to develop young players from a tactical standpoint through the numerous roles he’s held coaching soccer. Prior coaching stops include serving as the assistant women’s soccer coach at Lyon College in 2022, spending three seasons at El Reno (Oklahoma) High School as the head boys’ soccer coach, and coaching one season as a volunteer assistant for the Redlands Community College women’s soccer program.

Playing Career
Gonzalez spent four seasons with Mid-America Christian University from 2009-2012 and played in 71 games. He scored three goals, tallied four assists and recorded 27 shots on goal.

Education/Licenses
Gonzalez earned his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and Ethics from Mid-America Christian University in 2012. He also holds a National C Coaching License from the United States Soccer Federation; he is certified in goalkeeping, first aid and CPR; and he is a licensed referee for the USSF, NFHS and OSSAA.
