The Oklahoma Panhandle State University Rodeo Team expanded its coaching staff in 2016 with the addition of Shelbie Rose (formerly Weeder) to serve as the Assistant Women’s Rodeo Coach. She joined current rodeo coach, Robert Etbauer, and rodeo assistant, Sue Etbauer, to lead the multi-time national championship team.
Rose is a familiar face on the campus, as she earned a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science from Panhandle State while being an active member of the rodeo team.
During her time on the Panhandle State Rodeo Team, Rose served a two-year term as the Central Plains Region Student Director. This position enabled Rose to have a better understanding of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association rules, entry system and eligibility requirements; all skills necessary for the new position. She was named the 2015 Walt Garrison Award Recipient. The Walt Garrison Award, given through the National Intercollegiate RodeoÂ
Association (NIRA) each year, highlights numerous qualities that are part of the cowboy code of ethics including loyalty, commitment, honesty, perseverance and most importantly, leadership. The award was established in honor of former Dallas Cowboys football player and professional cowboy, Walt Garrison.
On the OPSU campus, Rose was involved in FFA, Women in Ag, Block and Bridle and the Rodeo Team, where her impact has been felt to the highest degree. Her teammates sought her guidance in the practice pen, as Rose was known for her advice in the roping box, as well as her positive and uplifting spirit. In the medical absence of Coach Craig Latham,Rose played an instrumental role in the leadership of the team and was always the first person people called when they need a helping hand. Aside from her peers, Rose loves to help the younger generation of cowboys and cowgirls. Throughout junior rodeos, a flock of little cowpokes looked up to Rose as a role model both in and out of the arena.
The Holly, Colo. native also boasts an impressive resume inside the arena. Rose was named the All-Around Champion Cowgirl at the 2016 Doc Gardner Memorial Rodeo hosted by Panhandle State in Guymon each year. She was also a two-time Kansas High School Rodeo Association Breakaway Roping Champion.
In addition to coaching responsibilities,Rose recruits for both the rodeo team and agriculture department.
A current resident of Gruver, Texas, she was married to husband Kalen Rose in March of 2019.
