This Wichita, Kansas native joined Oklahoma Panhandle State University in 2017, wherein he aided in achieving the winningest record of Panhandle Baseball to date. Mercer and the coaching staff cemented the Aggies' inaugural appearance in the post season Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament, where the Aggies sealed a round-one victory over nationally ranked No. 23 Texas Wesleyan. 

Mercer began his high school playing career for Wichita Heights High School where he would excel to take the mound as the starting pitcher for WHHS' first game at the Kansas 6A Baseball State Tournament in 2012. Mercer also made a starting appearance at the All-State All-Star Game in Kansas. His other notable pre-collegiate accolades include selections for All-Metro (2012), two-time All-City (2011-2012) and All-State (2012). Mercer capped his senior year with a 4-1 record, a 0.73 ERA, 51 strikeouts, and his first no-hitter before signing to Newman University in Kansas. He continued his baseball career at Newman and Barton Community College, where he held starting roles, before being recruited to Ottawa University in Ottawa, Kansas, where he culminated his playing career and earned a spot on Ottawa University Baseball's All-Time Strikeout record list with 81 over his senior year. 

Prior to joining the coaching staff at OPSU, Mercer earned his Bachelors Degree in Accounting from Ottawa University in 2017.Â
