Panhandle State Welcomes Ashley Walyuchow as Athletic Director
Walyuchow, the 2015-16 NACDA NAIA Athletic Director of the Year, comes to OPSU with nearly 20 years of experience as an athletic director at Texas A&M University-Victoria (formerly University of Houston-Victoria). Outgoing Athletic Director Victor Esparza was officially announced July 1 as Panhandle State’s Interim Vice President of Advancement.
GOODWELL, Okla. — Oklahoma Panhandle State University Athletics announced Wednesday that Ashley Walyuchow has been hired as the new Athletic Director for the Aggies.
Walyuchow was the founding Director of Athletics at the University of Houston-Victoria, having served in that role from 2006 through early 2026. During Walyuchow's tenure, Jaguar teams won 21 conference championships and made 23 NAIA national tournament appearances.
His UHV career began in 2000 as the development office's first employee. Eventually, Walyuchow started the athletics program by raising over $200,000 in necessary seed money.
2007-08 marked UHV Athletics' inaugural season with the launch of the Jaguar baseball and softball teams. In 2010-11, the Jaguars added men's/women's golf and men's/women's soccer to their offering of intercollegiate varsity sports.
In total, Walyuchow started all six athletic programs from scratch at UHV and developed the Jaguars' brand, logo, mascot and school colors.
National recognition of Walyuchow's work includes him being named the 2015-16 NACDA Under Armour Athletics Director of the Year for the NAIA. Walyuchow later earned conference honors as the 2019-20 Red River Athletic Conference Athletic Director of the Year.
"I'm honored and excited to lead the Aggies program and build on the foundation of the proud tradition – supporting our coaches, elevating the experience for our student athletes and our fans," Walyuchow said. "I look forward to strengthening the ties between the Aggies and the Panhandle community."
A native of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Walyuchow earned a Bachelor of Arts in Communication from Washington State University. While attending WSU, he founded the university's hockey club and participated in it as a player/coach.
Walyuchow has additional experience in the sports realm, including having served as the Director of Broadcasting for the Lethbridge Black Diamonds, a Minor League Baseball team. He also has been a play-by-play broadcaster for over 20 years, across which he has called games at various levels for the sports of hockey, basketball, baseball and football.
Moreover, while at UHV, Walyuchow completed stints on the NAIA National Administrative Council and on the NAIA ADA Board of Directors as vice president and president.
Walyuchow will reside in Goodwell, Oklahoma, with his rescue dogs. In his spare time, Walyuchow enjoys cooking, playing golf, reading and traveling.
Leadership Transition
As part of the leadership transition for the Aggies, Victor Esparza has assumed the title of OPSU's Interim Vice President of Advancement. Esparza had served as the Director of Athletics since the 2020-21 year, including his interim status in that role until April 2021.
"Victor has transformed this athletic department with his leadership of empowerment of coaches and dedication to the student-athlete experience," Athletics Senior Woman Leader Maria Belt said. "I look forward to continuing working with Victor in his new role. His understanding of the OPSU community and get-it-done mentality will allow us to see some fresh ideas come to life. Victor is sure to have an impact across the entire university as VP of Advancement."
Esparza's new position at OPSU entails providing "leadership for advancement operations, including development, alumni relations, and community engagement" as well as "oversight and strategic leadership for athletics," per Interim OPSU President, Dr. Ryan Blanton
"Serving as Athletic Director at Oklahoma Panhandle State University has been one of the greatest privileges of my professional career," Esparza said.
