Aggie Football Bacone-Bound

Goodwell, Okla.—The OPSU football team takes to the road this week en route to Muskogee, Okla. with plans to add another notch to their win column as they play Bacone College Saturday, Oct. 19 at 2 p.m.

The Aggies (3-4) are coming off a shut-out (41-0) homecoming victory against Texas College and hope to re-harness that energy again this week against the Warriors (4-2). The team came away from Muskogee last year with a disappointing loss (7-40) and will be looking to the Darkside defense this year to help squash Bacone's hopes for another high-scoring game.

Anchored by two hard-hitting defensive ends, Allen Maxime and Glenn Bonner, the Darkside-D is capable of putting pressure on the quarterback during pass plays. Bonner and Maxime have piled up eight sacks between the two of them; that's half of the team's combined total of 16 sacks for the season. Bonner can also attack the run and has brought in nine tackles-for-losses thus far; with help from linebackers Andrew Dougherty, Tanner Hallford, and Kris Kelley, the Warriors should have their work cut out for them. Defensive backs Jamel Major, Xazier Murry, Domonique Guest, and Keidrick Brewster will be covering receivers and looking to add to the teams' interception total of six.

The Aggie Offense has really been taking care of business, bringing in over 1,200 total yards against the last two opponents. Quarterback Caleb Holbrook has received solid protection from his offensive line; center Cole Wills is flanked by senior guards Marcus Dimando and Cameron Hickey and tackles Guerrero Garcia and Diego Arenas. Sophomore running back Chris McClendon has pulled in over 550 yards rushing thus far averaging over five yards per carry. Justin Fogle, Rod Moore, and Kameron Young have carried the ball for over 300 yards and ten touchdowns combined. The receiving crew of Jamal White and Rickey Backstrom will seek the end-zone as well this week along with tight end Spencer Grijalva who has been a reliable weapon tallying over one hundred yards receiving in the last two games.

Kicker Gabriel Ortega has been booting the ball out of the end-zone, giving nothing away on kickoffs and making teams earn yards the hard way. The Aggies will also need kicker Carlos Nieto to be on point with his accuracy this week and not miss any opportunities to add points to the board. The Aggies hope to be able to convert on third downs, but punter Antonio Mendoza will be at the ready when the need arises.

The Aggies continue their travels next week as they head to Waxahachie, Texas to play Southwest Assemblies of God and then return home for the last home game of the season on Saturday, Nov. 2 against Langston University.
