Goodwell, Okla.—After a disappointing performance against Bacone College, the Oklahoma Panhandle State University football team is ready to rally this week in Waxahachie; the Aggies (3-5) will take on Southwestern Assemblies of God University (2-4) on Saturday, Oct. 26.
The Aggies will be up against Reid Golson, senior quarterback for the Lions, who is averaging over 70 yards rushing per game and a little more than 130 yards passing, completing 84-152 with four interceptions. The Lions' defense is responsible for 26 pass break-ups, five interceptions, four forced fumbles, and four sacks thus far, so protection will be a key for the Aggies. Along with protection the Aggies will need to focus on being disciplined and not giving away yards; they are currently averaging over 80 yards per game in penalties.
If the Darkside defense can contain the running game and force a few turnovers, that will put a little less pressure on the offensive side of the ball; and with quarterback
Caleb Holbrook at the helm anchored by senior o-linemen
Marcus Dimando and
Cameron Hickey, the Aggie offense is certainly capable of taking over a game. Running backs
Chris McClendon and
Kameron Young can also make an impact; McClendon is averaging almost 80 yards per game and Young has brought in six touchdowns this season.
Jamal White leads the receivers with 23 catches for 348 yards.
Defensively the Aggies have landed 17 quarterback sacks, eleven of which come from the collective efforts of defensive ends
Glenn Bonner (6) and
Allen Maxime (5). This, when combined with the tackling of linebackers
Tanner Hallford (42 total) and
Andrew Dougherty (48 total) should make the Lions offense a little nervous. The Aggie DBs have also been an effective part of the Darkside with
Jamel Major bringing in two interceptions and five pass break-ups.
Kicker
Gabriel Ortega has shown his abilities on kick-offs as well as PAT and field goal attempts scoring three FGs against Bacone for the Aggies' only points in the game.
Rod Moore has also contributed to special teams averaging over 20 yards on returns.
Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. in Waxahachie, Texas. The Aggies will be back in Goodwell for their final home game of the season on Saturday, Nov. 2 against Langston University at 2 p.m.; a chili cook-off will take place at 11 a.m. and seniors will be recognized prior to the football game.
