Box Score 4 Goodwell, Okla.—OPSU volleyball returned from a four-game road trip with a nice victory under their belts. The team played in a tri-match and two conference games starting Thursday, Oct. 24.
First stop, Odessa, Texas where the Aggies went against conference rival University of Texas-Permian Basin. UTPB held the team to -.038 hitting percentage in the Aggies' three-set loss to the falcons (8-25, 12-25, 13-25).
Next the Aggies competed in a triangular match hosted by the University of the Southwest in Hobbs, N.M. on Friday, Oct. 25. Their first match-up was with Wiley College (Texas) who swept the Aggies in three (15-25, 14-25, 19-25); but the Aggies would not leave without a fight and came back to battle a four-set victory against USW in their second game (21-25, 25-23, 25-10, 25-22). The team brought in a record hitting percentage of .680 in the third set.
On Saturday, Oct. 26 the Aggies headed to Lubbock, Texas and put up a great effort against Lubbock Christian University but fell short of their first conference win losing 25-27, 17-25, and 18-25. Coach Stephens said that the team was in control for much of the first set and played sets two and three with equal determination and energy; he was proud of their effort.
Leading in scoring for the Aggies was
Brittany Dubberstein with 36 kills and 38 total points for the week; close behind were
Makayla Barrett with 34 kills and 34.5 points, and
Shaina Eddings who had 30 kills and 31.5 points. Freshman setter
Skylar Mayeux combined for 82 assists on the week and seven service aces; libero
Kayla Schwartz contributed a total of 37 digs followed by defensive specialist
Samantha McCay who brought in 22 digs and four service aces. As a team the Aggies tallied 15 blocks in four games.
The Aggies will play their final two home games of the season this week in the Oscar Williams Field House starting on Thursday, Oct. 31 with the Halloween Spike-tacular against St. Edward's University at 7 p.m. A Halloween costume contest will take place between the 2nd and 3rd sets with cash prizes for the winners along with free popcorn, door prizes, and trick-or-treating with the athletes after the game. On Friday, Nov. 1 the Aggies will take on McMurry University at 6 p.m.; seniors will be recognized before the game.
