Box Score 2 Laredo, Texas—Aggie volleyball took on two Heartland teams in Texas this week but, despite strong efforts, was unable to attain a conference win.
The Aggies traveled over 1,500 miles in just three days stopping first in Laredo, Texas for a match-up with Texas A&M-International on Friday, Nov. 8. The long road trip may have taken its toll on the team as they got off to a slow start in sets one and two, losing to the Dustdevils 13-25 and 15-25 respectively. The Aggies got their second wind in the third set when a kill by
Brittany Dubberstein brought on five straight points with
Sarah Koster up to serve. The game was tied at 8 apiece and the Aggies would battle through two more score-ties keeping the game within reach until the bitter end. The Dustdevils bested the Aggies in the third set 25-21.
Trekking back north to San Antonio, the Aggies then met up with the Rattlers of St. Mary's University on Saturday, Nov. 9. The Rattlers finished the Aggies off in three (19-25, 16-25, 16-25) but OPSU made them work for every point the scored. The Aggies increased their hitting percentage and decreased their service errors, improving from their match in Laredo. Dubberstein and
Shaina Eddings each contributed 11 points and
Rebecca Simmons and
Kayla Schwartz helped out combining for two service aces.
Dubberstein and Eddings led the Aggies in points and kills for the week; each bringing in 16 points on 15 kills. Libero
Kayla Schwartz had a good showing as well totaling 28 digs in two matches, and
Terra Madden was the team leader in assists with 26.
Coach Stephens described the trip as a "roller coaster," and felt that the team played "very well against a very good St. Mary's team."
The Aggies finish their season in Kansas this week, ending with two conference games: Fort Hays State (Hays) on Friday, Nov. 15 at 5 p.m. and Newman University (Wichita) on Saturday, Nov. 16 at Noon.
