Box Score 2 Wichita, Kan.—The 2013 season came to a close this weekend as OPSU volleyball traveled to Kansas for two final match-ups against Fort Hays State and Newman University.
Starting off Friday in Hays, Kan., the Aggies fell in three sets to the 14-18 Tigers. Fort Hays held the Aggies to a negative hitting percentage in the first set and took a 25-14 victory; but the Aggies came back for a fight in set two landing 11 kills, three blocks, and one service ace. The game was within two points at 20-22 when the Tigers brought in three straight kills to take the win with a final score of 25-20. The Aggies started slow in the third set, never gaining the lead and Fort Hays finished the job winning 25-13 over OPSU.
The Aggies' final game took place Saturday in Wichita against Heartland team Newman University. The Lady Jets kept the Aggies in check by holding them to a combined -.034 hitting percentage. Newman also controlled the serve, landing 12 aces and only three service errors the entire game. The Aggies were unable to reach double digits in the first two sets, losing 9-25 and 8-25 respectively. OPSU struggled in the beginning of the third set, getting down by as much as eight points, and though they would fight back to within four late in the game, they were unable to pull ahead and lost the third set 18-25.
Setter
Skylar Mayeux contributed a total of 24 assists and two service aces between the two games; Mayeux was ranked seventh in the conference in assists and first in service aces.
Brittany Dubberstein led the team in scoring bringing in 13.5 points and 12 kills for the week.
Makayla Barrett and
Shaina Eddings each contributed to the Aggies 8 total team blocks, and
Kayla Schwartz started all six sets at libero. The Aggies finish their season 4-27 and 0-17 in the Heartland Conference.
Coach
Mike Stephens is proud of the team's growth over the course of the season: "We are much improved from last year. With the core of returners and early commitments we have for the fall of 2014, we should be closer to reaching our athletic goals. Preparation for success in 2014 began before we completed this fall. We can't wait!"
