Box Score 2 The Oklahoma Panhandle State University men's and women's basketball teams both competed on the road this weekend: the men took on UC-Colorado Springs in Colorado while the women traveled to Kansas, playing Fort Hays State. Both teams played on Saturday, and both teams came out without the win.
The Aggie women got off to a late start as bus troubles kept them in Goodwell, unable to leave until Noon, their initial game time; tip-off was delayed until 6 p.m. The game, much like the bus trip, got off to an unusual start with four consecutive back-and-forth turnovers landing in Tiger possession and ending with a three-pointer to give FHSU the early lead. Aggie turnovers persisted, and OPSU would go into halftime down by 20 with a score of 46-26. The Tigers would continue to dominate, limiting the Aggies to just 27.3% from the field and scoring 22 points off 17 total Aggie turnovers. The Aggies were unable to get things going in the second half and took a 64-point loss to the Tigers with a painful final score of 109-45; their record falls to 0-3.
Sarah Johnson and
Brittany Alavinejad led the Aggies in scoring bringing in 11 and 10 points respectively; Johnson shared the lead in assists with
Meagan Bell, each earning three. The Aggies only brought down a total of 24 rebounds with
Courtney Sheets leading the team at four.
Morgan Rickwartz was perfect from three-point range making 2-2 and Alavinejad contributed three successful three-point attempts.
The Aggie women are currently ranked sixth overall in the Heartland Conference and stand at third in assists, fourth in 3-point percentage, and fifth in free-throw percentage.
OPSU's men took on UC-Colorado Springs at 7 p.m. in the Gallogly Events Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. The Aggies started in the hole due to an early foul but soon got back on track, working their way up to a five point lead with just 5:29 left in the first half. The lead would not last however, as Aggie turnovers and missed baskets would bring them down by eight with a score of 38-30 going into halftime. Unable to regain the lead in the second half, the Aggie men came out with an 87-71 loss to the Mountain Lions. UCCS kept the Aggies down to 35.3% from the field and took advantage of 13 Aggie turnovers and 25 player fouls.
Three Aggies scored double-digits:
T. J. Farrell led the team with 21 points followed by Z. Jones and
Krys Randolph who brought in 15 and 12 points respectively. Jones shot 7-11 from the free-throw line and also contributed three assists and five rebounds while
Tavien Rosemond led in rebounds with six. The Aggies scored 32 points in the paint and had help from the bench totaling 14 points.
The men's team is currently ranked tenth in the conference but will no doubt move up in the rankings as the season progresses. The team sits sixth in the Heartland in free-throw and three-point percentage and Z. Jones is currently ranked 13th in scoring, averaging 15.5 points per game.
Both teams play at home Tuesday, Nov. 19 against West Texas A&M, with the women starting at 5:30 p.m. followed by the men's game at 7:30 p.m.; Quality Carpet Care and Kwik Kar are this week's game sponsors. Â
Aggie fans are invited to dress in camouflage and safety orange to help the Aggies go "Huntin' for Wins" and take open season on the Buffs (absolutely no weapons are allowed). A No-Shave November Best Beard contest will take place at halftime with prizes for the best groomed and most likely to be a mountain man. The OPSU Sports Information Office and Aggie Athletics are also kicking off a canned food drive during Tuesday's games which will run during every home game through Dec. 7. All proceeds will go to Loaves and Fishes Food Cupboard of Guymon. Fans will be entered into a raffle to win autographed Aggie basketballs and a personalized official Aggie basketball jersey; one raffle ticket for each food item received.
