Goodwell, Okla.—Get ready to hoop it up Aggie fans! Basketball season is officially upon us and the OPSU Aggies are back and ready for action.
The Aggie men kicked their season off properly Sunday evening with a big win in the exhibition game against the New Mexico All-Stars (108-52). Five players scored in the double-digits with junior
Terrence Williams and senior
Kysahn Sands leading with 19 and 16 points respectively.
The men's team returns five seniors this season including forwards
Tavien Rosemond,
Kysahn Sands,
Bill Lee, and
T. J. Farrell; also returning is senior guard
Krys Randolph. Three new transfers look to make an impact on the team this season with point guard Z. Jones coming from St. Edward's University as a senior, forward
Terrence Williams from Allen Community College and
Dawayne Matthews from Clarendon Community College both enter as juniors. Guard
Jeremy Newton and forward
Stephen Miller also hope to add experience to the team as returning juniors. The Aggies will also feature some local talent this year with freshman forward
Austin Glover and junior transfer
Trey Fankhouser both of Goodwell. Rounding out the freshman class from Oklahoma is guard
Austin Beene of Cartwright, guard
Jake Regier of Forgan, point guard
Alex Sanchez of Hooker, and forward
Payson Slater of Tyrone; freshman
Loren Horton is a freshman point guard from Chicago, Ill.
This year's coaching staff consists of Head Coach
Jerry Olson, Assistant Coaches
Reggie Lassiter and
Jared Messer, and Manager
Caleb Mihelic. Coach Olson said that "as long as we can stay healthy and keep everyone together this year, I think we have enough depth to surprise some people. Due to our size rebounding will be a concern, so this season we are placing a big emphasis on blocking out."
The men's team takes to the road this week, playing a two-day tournament hosted by Cameron University in Lawton, Okla. Game one will be on Friday, Nov. 8 at 6 p.m. vs. Cameron and game two for the Aggies will take place Saturday, Nov. 9 at 8 p.m. vs. Texas A&M Commerce. Both games will offer live stats and video; links are available on the Aggie Athletics website on the men's basketball schedule.
