Aggie Athletics on the Road This Week

Goodwell, Okla.—It will be a quiet week for sports on the campus of Oklahoma Panhandle State University as the Aggie volleyball, football, and cross country teams all hit the road going their separate ways for competition.

The Aggie volleyball team (2-8) took to the road Wednesday afternoon to travel to Texas for three matches. They will start their tour with a conference game against McMurry (4-7) in Abilene on Thursday, Sept. 26 at 7 p.m.  The War Hawks are currently ranked second in the conference while the Aggies are looking for their first conference win. Live stats and audio links for the McMurry game will be available on the OPSU Aggie Athletics website. From Abilene the team will travel south to Austin for two matches: the first on Friday, Sept. 27 at 6 p.m. vs. Huston-Tillotson (1-12) followed by another conference match-up against St. Edward's University (3-7) on Saturday, Sept. 28 at Noon. SEU will offer live stats and video links which will be made available on the OPSU Aggie Athletics website on the volleyball schedule.

Football will also be Texas-bound. The team will bus-up Friday afternoon and make their way to Abilene to take on McMurry University. This should prove to be a great match-up; McMurry (0-3) and OPSU (1-3) are the only two schools in the Heartland Conference with football programs and have played very similar schedules thus far. The War Hawks have accumulated over 1000 total yards on offense and a whopping 288 tackles on defense. The Aggies look to use their running game to attack offensively; Chris McClendon has been their top rusher averaging over 75 yards per game.  On defense the Aggies will need to focus on covering the passing game; and with defensive backs like Xazier Murry and Cedric Coleman, who each had pass break-ups against Division I-AA Montana last week, McMurry should feel the pressure of the "Darkside" defense. Live stats and audio links will be available on the OPSU Aggie Athletics website.

The men's and women's cross country teams will head west to Las Vegas, N.M. to compete in the Highlands University Cross Country Jam. The meet includes five teams: OPSU, New Mexico Highlands,  South Plains College, Western New Mexico, and Dine' College. The Aggie men will bring Gideon Busienei, Steve Labude, Ty Stephens, Iago Goncalves, and Bill Lee. Whitley Coca, Teenie Kent, Korie Ham, Debra Kime, Delta Higdon, and Shelby Perry will compete for the women. Busienei and Coca each won their first meets and were named Heartland Conference athletes of the week for Sept. 9-15.

Safe travels, safe returns, and best of luck to all of our Aggie teams!
