Aggies Fall to Top-Ranked Lady Chaps

Box Score Goodwell, Okla.—The Lubbock Christian University Lady Chapparals rolled into town Saturday undefeated in the Heartland Conference (11-0), and left later that afternoon with their 15th straight win; LCU took a 97-61 victory over the Aggies.

The Aggies kept up with the top-ranked Lady Chaps trading shots through the first six minutes of play, but found themselves down by a margin of 28 points at halftime (56-28). LCU went into the break shooting 49 percent from the field and had held the Aggies to 38 percent, leaving them scoreless from three-point range.

Defensively the Aggies pulled things together in the second half improving in rebounds and steals, and cutting their turnovers down to six from 11 in the first half. Senior Kortney Williams earned all seven of her rebounds after halftime; and Williams, Sarah Johnson, and Haley Bonilla combined for four of the Aggies' five total steals for the game in the second half.

LCU took advantage of seven empty possessions by the Aggies and jumped ahead by 36 points at the eleven-minute mark. Bonilla got the Aggies going again with a jumper and the Aggies would add 15 more points to the scoreboard over the next seven minutes, but still found themselves down by 28 with less than five minutes left in the game. Rosa Quinonez and Tyenne Mercer each landed a three-pointer in the final minutes of play but the Lady Chaps' lead was too great to overcome.

OPSU Coach Charles Terry said that, "We played a well-coached, ten-scholarship team that is leading the conference in a top-notch program. Our team is pretty beat up but we're still playing hard; we competed and that was the purpose."

The Aggie women continued to show their strength from the free-throw line shooting a perfect 12-12 against LCU. Overall the Aggies own a 1-17 record and have one conference win under their belts.

OPSU heads south this week to Laredo and San Antonio, Texas for conference match-ups against Texas A&M International on Jan. 30 and St. Mary's University on Feb. 1. The women will be back at home for a PINK OUT game against McMurry University on Thursday, Feb. 6 at 5:30 p.m. in support of breast cancer awareness.
