Box Score 3 Goodwell, Okla.—The OPSU Aggies had a long week of travel and play which, even though the Aggies played hard, led to some undesirable outcomes.
The Aggies competed in Dallas Texas against Dallas Baptist University on Thursday, Oct. 9 for a Heartland Conference match. OPSU played hard, but the serving and blocking of DBU was too much to compete with. The Aggies had a total of three aces and two blocks which contributed to the total of 24 points; while DBU had a total of 12 aces and six blocks. The Aggies had a total of 30 digs for the match lead by
Megan Archuleta with 10. Also contributing to the digs was
Terra Madden with six and
Shaina Eddings with five. Unfortunately the game was not in favor of the Aggies as they fell short: 12-25, 6-25, 6-25.
Head Coach
Mike Stephens commented, "We played a DBU team that hasn't met their expectations this year; they were hungry to turn their season around. We played hard but they had some very lucky plays that when combined with a greater determination than ours led to us not meeting our goals."
On Friday, Oct. 10 the Aggies traveled to Arkadelphia, Ark. for a non-conference match against the Reddies of Henderson State University. The Aggies came out strong taking the first set of the match 25-23. HSU then battled back and won the next three games 25-10, 25-15, and 25-23. The Aggies had a total of 36 kills lead by
Shaina Eddings with 11 and
Tayler Burzette with nine.
Dejiana Rubio lead the team in digs having 14 of the total 49 digs with Archuleta close behind with 12.
Natalya Weber also contributed by having five kills and four digs.
The following day the Aggies played in the Stubblefield Center at Fort Smith, Ark. for a Heartland Conference match against the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith. UAFS has always been a challenging team to play against, being number one in the Heartland Conference the past two years. The UAFS Lions won the match in three games: 25-6, 25-11 and 25-11. The Aggies had a total of 19 digs, 12 kills, and two serving aces. Weber and Burzette lead the team with four kills each.
"The beauty of conference play is that after this weekend we see everyone else again, with many of these matches occurring at home during special events," Coach Stephens stated.
The Aggies have one day of practice as they prepare for a match against Northwestern Oklahoma State University on Tuesday, Oct. 14 in Alva, Okla.
Wear pink and join the Aggies as they host a Pink-Out match in support of breast cancer awareness on Thursday, Oct. 16 at 7:00 p.m. against the visiting University of Texas-Permian Basin. The Aggies will also have a Halloween Spike-tacular on Oct. 30 and students and community members are encouraged to wear their costumes!
Also in support of breast cancer awareness, throughout the entire month of October the volleyball team will be selling tickets for a chance to throw a pie in one of the coaches' face. The drawing and pie throwing will take place at the last home match on Nov. 4 against Northwestern Oklahoma State University.
