Box Score Alva, Okla.—The Oklahoma Panhandle State University women's basketball team took an eight-point loss on the road Saturday against the Northwestern Oklahoma State University Rangers in Alva, Okla.
The Rangers earned their first win of the season in the 69-61 victory over the Aggies, but OPSU Head Coach
Charles Terry is proud of his team saying, "Our kids are really competing; I'm very proud of how we hung tough on the road."
A tight match-up from start to finish, the Aggies kept a close distance through most of the game; the Rangers were able to pull ahead by as much as 16 points in the first half but the Aggies narrowed their sights and went in to the locker room down by just nine points at halftime (37-28).
Hannah Tatum and
Sade Tutson helped cut the Ranger lead by contributing four points each at the end of the half.
Tutson came out of the locker room ready for action, landing a shot good for three to open the second half. Later in the half
Jaclyn Becker put up a successful shot from beyond the arc to pull the Aggies to within one point of the lead (48-47). The on-court battle ensued ending in favor of the Rangers with a score of 69-61.
The Aggies gave nothing away earning ten second-chance points to Northwestern's four. The main area of disparity came from the bench where the Rangers outscored the Aggies 37-18. Overall, NWOSU held the Aggies to a 38 percent average from the field and 31 percent from three-point range. Terry added, "We just need to start knocking down shots."
OPSU held the leading scorer for the game in
Tatyana Bell who finished with 14 total points; Bell earned her second double-double of the season by bringing down ten rebounds, also a game-high. Bell took four steals from the Rangers and was tied by
Hannah Tatum with ten rebounds of her own.
Other strong contributors for the Aggies included
Kiera Waters who scored 12 points and offered three assists as well as
Sade Tutson who contributed 11 points. The Rangers had four players scoring in double digits led by Emily Eaton with 13 points; Kamera Bozeman led her team in rebounds with five and Relina Johnson had a game-high five assists for NWOSU.
The Aggies move to 1-3 on the season and will travel to Wichita Falls, Texas for their next match-up against Midwestern State on Tuesday, Nov. 25 at 5:30 p.m. The women return to the Oscar Williams Field House for home-court action against the University of Nebraska- Kearney on Sunday, Nov. 30 at 1:30p.m.
