Lions Take Three over Aggie Baseball

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 Fort Smith, Ark.—The Aggies' five-game winning streak was snapped this weekend as they dropped a three-game series on the road to the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith, losing 3-2, 5-4, and 9-2 in their first Heartland match-up of the season.

The series started with a double-header Friday afternoon. Freshman left-hander Sam Beattie took the mound in game one and stayed for six of the seven innings, allowing three earned runs and throwing two strikeouts.

Josh Casillas came in to close with bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh and a sacrifice fly brought in the winning run with just one out. Beattie took the loss for game one bringing his record to 1-2 on the season.

Both Aggie runs were scored in the sixth inning on a Peyton Osbon double that brought in 2 RBI; Lucas Ogaz and Trey Wooten each earned a run.

Game two was another close match-up and the Aggies struck first with Robert Montoya earning the first run of the game in the second inning; Montoya was walked to first, brought to second on a SAC bunt by Ethan Moffitt, and brought in on a Jordan Bernal double.

The Lions brought in two runs in the third and one run each in the fourth and fifth going up 4-1 after five innings; both teams went scoreless in the sixth.

The Aggies came back to life in the seventh inning earning three runs and tying things up at 4-4. Senior Bo Ybarra homered with two on base bringing in three RBI and with that, the Lions made a pitching change and closed out the top of the inning.

The eighth inning was quiet for both teams and the Aggies went three-up/three-down to open the ninth.

Dylan Chavez came in at the bottom of the ninth to relieve Spencer Long on the mound for the Aggies. After walking his first runner, Chavez was replaced by Adam Burke who had the final winning run hit to win the game for the Lions.

The Aggies finished with six hits and four RBI in game two; Ybarra with threeRBI and Bernal with one RBI. Dylan Dudley led the team in hits going 2-4 and Osbon, Montoya, Bernal, and Ybarra contributed one hit each.

Both teams were in full swing Saturday afternoon for game three with the Aggies crushing 14 hits and the Lions 13. Tom Parker was the starting pitcher for the Aggies.

Once again OPSU scored first as Dylan Dudley crossed the plate off a Nicolas Zieniuk double at the top of the third. UAFS brought in three runs of their own in the third going up by two.

Trey Wooten smacked a triple in the fourth and scored during the next at bat when Peyton Osbon reached on an error by second base. The Lions went on the score four more runs in in the fourth bringing them up by a score of 7-2.

Adam Burke came in to pitch in the fifth and kept the Lions tamed through the eighth inning when they scored their last two runs. The Aggies remained scoreless after the fourth inning and Tom Parker took the loss.

Two Aggies tripled in the third game; Trey Wooten and Lucas Ogaz both in the fourth inning. Nicolas Zieniuk hit the only double of the game in the third inning and had the only RBI for the Aggies. Wooten went 3-4 with one run and Dudley hit 3-5 with one run. Dudley also totaled ten putouts at first base.

The Aggies record moves to 5-10 overall and 0-3 in the Heartland Conference. They are back home this week for a nine-inning game versus Wayland Baptist. The game has been moved up to Monday, Feb. 24 due to impending weather conditions; first pitch is set for 2:30 p.m.
