Aggies Put Up Great Effort against NWOSU

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Goodwell, Okla.—Wednesday afternoon the Aggie baseball team of OPSU took on in-state opponent Northwestern Oklahoma State University in a double-header on the Aggies' home field. Games were pushed back to Wednesday due to weather-related issues on Tuesday.
 
The two teams met previously in a three-game series that opened each of their seasons. The Rangers won all three games in their first match-up, and would get the best of the Aggies again as they edged out two victories (8-7, 9-7) in both seven-inning match-ups.
 
Zach Tingen started on the mound for the Aggies in game one, and Eddie Cumpston was the starting pitcher for the Rangers. Tingen went five innings for OPSU, giving up seven hits and four earned runs.
 
Spencer Long and Patrick Gonzales each got an inning of work for the Aggies. Gonzales was able to toss two strikeouts in his time on the mound.
 
Cumpston pitched 4.2 innings, giving up four hits, and three runs; he tossed three strikeouts. Thomas Sander, Christian Lafontan, Daniel Bolanos, Jake Bersche, and Chase Randall all also got to spend time on the mound for NWOSU.
 
Logan Porter for NWOSU, Jonathan Freemyer, and Christian Hammerl were all able to knock in two runs apiece for the Rangers, and teammate Michael Morales brought in one run.
 
For the Aggies, Peyton Osborn had a good game at the plate going 2-4 and knocking in three runs for OPSU. Ruben Aguirre and Chris McClendon each contributed one RBI. McClendon and Bo Ybarra each drove a double in game one.
 
The Rangers dinged in three runs in the second inning to start the scoring off. The Aggies tied things up at 3-3 scoring three runs in the fifth, but NWOSU answered with five runs in the sixth bringing the Rangers ahead 8-3. Gonzales kept the Rangers quiet in the seventh throwing two strikeouts and grabbing a ground ball for an out. The Aggies fought back with four runs in the seventh but  were unable to come up with the win, losing by one run, 8-7.
 
In game two B.J. Henry was starting on the mound for OPSU, and Brennen Rodriguez led off pitching for NWOSU. Henry pitched 3.1 innings, giving up eight hits and eight runs; he was able to pitch two strikeouts.
 
Josh Casillas went 1.2 innings for the Aggies giving up two hits, one earned run, and also collected two strikeouts. Adam Burke also saw action on the mound going two innings while collecting one punch out.
 
Rodriguez only went 2.2 innings for NWOSU; he gave up five runs and walked four batters in his short stint on the mound. The Rangers called on three other pitchers in the game.
 
Alex Marquez for NWOSU had a good day at the plate going 2-4 with three RBI. Joshua Caruso had an outstanding day batting; Caruso went 2-3 and knocked in four big RBI for the Rangers. Logan Porter and Jeff Martin each brought in one RBI.
 
OPSU's Jacob Milburn, Ruben Aguirre and Nicholas Zieniuk each brought in one RBI for the Aggies in game two.
 
The Aggies got things going in game two scoring three runs in the second inning, while NWOSU sat scoreless. The Rangers heated up quickly and brought in six runs in the third off a three-run homer and double that also scored three.
 
Lucas Ogaz and Ruben Aguirre came across home plate in the third to add two more runs for the Aggies, but NWOSU answered with two runs of their own to start the fourth inning. OPSU would also grab two runs in the fourth to bring the score to 8-7 with the Rangers up by one.
 
Northwestern's Joshua Caruso crushed a homer in the fifth for a single run and that would end the scoring for both teams as the Aggies again were unable to come up with the win, dropping game two by a score of 9-7.
 
With Wednesday's losses the Aggies drop to 5-18 on the season. Aggie baseball stays at home this week taking on a Heartland Conference matchup with Texas A&M International Friday, March 14 (double header) and Saturday, March 15; games start at 1 p.m. on both days.
