Box Score 3 Odessa, Texas—Following two good wins at home Wednesday against Colorado Christian, Aggie baseball traveled to Odessa for a Heartland series against the University of Texas-Permian Basin and left empty-handed.
The Falcons managed a three-game sweep over OPSU winning 13-1, 2-0 and 2-1 on their home field.
Freshman lefty
Felipe Beltran led off on the mound for the Aggies in game one and went four innings giving up three hits and six earned runs; Beltran threw three strikeouts.
Adam Burke entered the mound for two outs and was then relieved by
Patrick Gonzales who pitched 1.1 innings and threw one strikeout.
The Aggies scored their first and only run of game one in the first inning when Peyton Osbon crossed home on a single by
Robert Montoya. Osbon singled to get on base and was advanced by a sacrifice bunt by
Ethan Moffitt followed by a single by
Nick Crosswhite.
UTPB went on to score 13 runs, eight in the fifth inning alone, and grabbed their sixth Heartland Conference victory. Beltran took the loss on the mound for the Aggies and Falcon pitcher Brad Papamapoonya earned his fifth win of the season.
Walker Rainwater took the loss in game two pitching seven innings for the Aggies and allowing six hits and only one earned run. The junior pitcher threw six strikeouts in the Falcons' 2-0 shutout win.
The Falcons scored their two runs in the first inning and from that point on the pitchers kept things under control allowing zero runs in the remaining eight innings; both teams combined for only ten hits in game two. Jesse Arnold got the shutout win for UTPB giving up four runs and throwing nine strikeouts.
Saturday's game three was also a well-controlled game with a combined three runs scored and 15 total strikeouts. Chris McClendon scored the lone run for the Aggies in the fourth inning, brought in on a single by
Evan Offutt.
The Falcons scored one run in the third inning and one run in the sixth, the last run of the day which gave them the series sweep with a score of 2-1.
Spencer Long threw a complete eight innings for the Aggies in game three taking the loss with eight hits and two earned runs; Long threw seven strikeouts. UTPB's Lance Fairchild grabbed his first win of the season in nine innings allowing nine hits and one earned run; he struck out eight Aggie batters.
Evan Offutt led the team in hitting going 3-6 with one RBI for the series;.
Robert Montoya also brought in one RBI for the weekend.
Nick Crosswhite totaled 12 putouts from first base and
Nicolas Zieniuk put out 15 at catcher.
The Aggies record now sits at 11-25 overall with two conference wins as they head into a break. Their next match-up is a three-game conference series in Claremore, Okla. with Rogers State April 11-12. The Aggies will be back home to continue conference play against St. Edward's University April 17-18.
