Box Score Alamosa, Colo.—On September 4, 2014, the OPSU Aggie football team opened their season against Adams State University under the lights of Rex Stadium in Alamosa, Colo. Although the game ended 23-7 in the favor of Adams State, the Aggies proved their talent on both sides of the ball.
The OPSU offense showed their ability to move the ball down the field by racking up a total of 390 total yards and 21 first down conversions, besting Adams State in both aspects.
Caleb Holbrook fired for 268 yards through the air, and ran for another 44.
On defense,
Neptune Joseph led the team in tackles with a total of 12 and
Andrew Dougherty followed with a total of nine. The Aggie defense also stuffed their opponent for two safeties and managed to force an interception with solid end zone coverage from
Jamel Major.
The Aggies' special teams contributed with three kick-off returns for a total of 89 yards, and a 45-yard field goal from the big leg of
Gabriel Ortega.
Overall, the Aggies started the season with a 0-1 record; however, they showed many positives with which they can build they can build upon this season. Head Coach,
Russell Gaskamp, commented on his players by saying, "I was proud of my players; the way they traveled and played. The defense started a little shaky, but played very well for the last three quarters. We had to rely on the offense executing during the game, but turnovers were a factor. We are going to work out the mistakes and bounce back next week. "
The Aggies will play their first home game Saturday, Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. against the Fort Lewis Skyhawks. Coach Gas encourages Aggie fans to come early; free t-shirts will be given out to the first 300 fans through the gates. Wear red, get rowdy and REV IT UP!
