Box Score 2 Wichita, Kan.—OPSU basketball continued Heartland Conference play Saturday afternoon with two match-ups against Newman University; neither the Aggie women nor the men were able to bring home a win.
Despite a great second-half effort, the Aggie women took a 67-52 loss to the Jets. The Aggies were down by 13 points at the break (30-17), but came back strong in the second half, more than doubling their first-half efforts. The win moved Newman to 2-4 in the conference with an overall record of 5-9; the Aggies now sit 2-12 on the season.
Kiera Waters led the Aggies in scoring with 22 points and shared the team-high in rebounds with
Tatyana Bell, each with seven. Newman's Brianna Caldwell totaled a game-high 23 points and teammate Kesha Buckner earned a double-double with 11 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
The Aggie men also found themselves down by 13 points at the half, but continued to shine from beyond the arc totaling seven three-pointers in the first twenty minutes. The men struggled from three-point range in the second half going 1-11 and could not bridge the gap with the Jets. The Newman men also sit 2-4 in conference play and now own a 6-6 overall record; the Aggies, with one conference win, are now 3-10 overall.
Antonio Manns, Jr. held the game-high in scoring with 21 points and also brought down eight boards;
Marquavius Williams contributed six assists on the game for the Aggies. Luka Vermezovic was the leading scorer for Newman totaling 18 points; he also earned a game-high with nine rebounds. Cortrael Colbert earned a double-double in points and assists with 11 each for the Jets.
Bot Aggie teams return to the Oscar Williams Field House this week to take on the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith Thursday evening starting at 5:30 p.m. with the women. The Aggies will also play Saturday with another conference match-up against Rogers State; games begin at 1 p.m.
