Box Score 2 Goodwell, Okla.—The Aggies took two losses at home Saturday afternoon as Rogers State University rolled past the Aggie men with a 96-55 victory and held strong through a great second-half effort to take an 85-64 win over the Aggie women.
After a disappointing first half which found the Aggies down 42-16, the OPSU ladies came back with a vengeance to outscore the Hillcats 48-43 in the second half. The Aggies' shooting drastically improved from 18 percent to 62 percent after the break, but the effort could not overcome the first-half deficit and the Hillcats earned their third Heartland win of the season.
Rogers State's Breanna Burford earned a game-high with 20 points, joined by Jade Hardy who led the game in assists with seven.
Tatyana Bell led the Aggies in scoring with 15 points followed closely by
Brittany Alavinejad who totaled 14 points. Three Aggies finished with ten points each:
Kiera Waters,
Celci Bakos and
Hannah Tatum. Tatum grabbed a game-high in rebounds with nine and also contributed three assists and three steals.
With the loss the Aggie women fall to 2-14 on the season. Coach
Charles Terry maintains his pride in his teams' effort saying, "We're still playing hard. We're missing a good solid mesh and still struggle to score, but we're playing hard."
The Aggie men had a tough time getting things going against the Hillcats in Saturday's game, averaging 32 percent from the field and an uncharacteristic 46 percent at the line, their lowest free-throw percentage of the season. In the first half alone the Aggies went 1-11 from three-point range and improved to 5-11 in the second half averaging 27 percent in long distance shots for the game.
John Lazenby and
Antonio Manns, Jr. each landed three shots from beyond the arc accounting for all six of the teams' three-point shots.
Rogers averaged 57 percent from the field and 68 percent from the line for the game, and went 13-21 in three-point attempts. The Hillcats left the court with a comfortable 49-22 lead over the Aggies at the half and continued to dominate in the second half taking a 41-point victory. RSU's men now own a 10-6 overall record and four wins in the Heartland Conference. OPSU drops to 3-12 with one conference win.
The game-high in scoring went to DesJuan Newton of Rogers State with 20 points. Newton also shared a game-high in assists with teammate Cory Ayala; each totaling five. Frederico Santos earned the only double-double of the day with 12 points and a game-high 11 rebounds for the Hillcats. For the Aggies,
John Lazenby led his team with 19 points followed by Manns with 14.
DeShawn Dean led defensively with eight rebounds and three blocks.
OPSU Coach
Jerry Olson said simply, "We've got to get better." Olson acknowledged the winning team stating, "RSU played really well; they made shots and executed well." The Aggies' coach continued, "Defensively we've got to get better and see more effort out of all five guys. We also had a few selfish moments, but when we actually ran sets right and got open shots, we couldn't knock them down. We also have got to make our free-throw shots."
The Aggies will have their work cut out for them as they take on Lubbock Christian University Monday evening in the Oscar Williams Field House. LCU's women are currently ranked first in the Heartland Conference and are on a three-game winning streak; the Chaparral men sit third in the conference ranks. The women will tip-off at 5:30 p.m. and the men will follow at 7:30 p.m.
