All Aggies Assist with Win over Barclay

Box Score Goodwell, Okla.—Every member of the OPSU Men's Basketball team that suited up for Tuesday night's game against Barclay College contributed playing time and points in the Aggies' 48-point victory (132-84) over the Bears.

A total of 64 points came from the Aggie bench, 42 of which were scored in the second half of the game. Senior Jared Straight led the bench with 18 points and shot 100 percent for the night landing three-for-three beyond the arc as well as at the line. DeShawn Dean, also a senior, came through with 11 points and seven rebounds; and Brian Davis and Robert McCalley put up ten points apiece. Sita Sesay, Collin Miller and Tray Fankhouser combined for the remaining 15 points scored from the bench.

The Aggies owned a 62-40 lead going into halftime and had scored half of those points off Barclay turnovers. The Bear committed 37 turnovers in the game which led to 59 points scored for the Aggies. With a total of 55 fouls charged between the two teams, the free throw line saw a lot of action as both teams performed well at the line. Barclay scored 20 points in free throws and shot 71 percent missing only eight shots; and OPSU averaged 67 percent from the line sinking 33 of 49 free throws on the night.

Antonio Manns, Jr. led the Aggies in scoring with 20 points followed by Straight's 18 and Zoran Arsenovic who totaled 17 points. Head coach Jerry Olson was very pleased with the team total of 28 assists awarded Tuesday night saying, "We're really trying to find other players to get the ball to and give other guys some shots." Dedrick Shannon, Jr. led the team in assists with 11 along with Melvin Mitchell who had six.

Defensively the Aggies stuck with steady pressure which contributed to the high turnover rate by the Bears. On 37 turnovers the Aggies had 22 steals, six of which were taken by the hands Shannon who also had one block on the night as well. Arsenovic and Dean led the team in rebounding, each with seven boards and Shannon and Manns each brought down six. Although Olson didn't feel the team played very solid defensively he did agree that the pressure "got to them [Barclay] a bit."

The coach added, "I'm very happy for the win. One thing I saw tonight that needs improvement is that we got caught up in running and didn't keep the ball in front of us; there was way too much penetration."

Freshman Quinton Walker led the Bears with 20 points and seven rebounds along with Jay Milton and Jay Bradley who scored 16 and ten points respectively. The Bears averaged 47 percent from the field and 40 percent at three-point range while the Aggies shot at 57 percent from the field and landed 44 percent of their long-distance shots.

The Aggie men will have the rest of the week to prepare for a big road game in San Marcos, Texas on Nov. 24. OPSU will take on NCAA Division-I opponent Texas State out of the Sun Belt Conference. The Bobcats opened their season with an 84-49 win against Division-III team UT-Tyler.
