Box Score Goodwell, Okla.—The Oscar Williams Field House was packed with pink Thursday evening as the Aggie Basketball teams hosted a Pink-Out for breast cancer awareness and to show support for one special lady in her fight.
Jennifer Lazenby, recently diagnosed with breast cancer, is the proud mother of the Aggies' starting guard
John Lazenby. The men's basketball team sold pink t-shirts with the words "Jennifer's Fight / Aggies Fight" on them, with proceeds going directly to the Lazenby family to assist with any medical financial needs that arise. Many came out to support the teams and the great cause, adding an extra spark of excitement to the night.
It was Lazenby who opened up scoring for the Aggies landing a big three-pointer in the first minute and sending the crowd into full roar. The Aggies battled hard throughout the first half against a 10-8 Newman team and went into halftime down by three points with a score of 47-44. Lazenby finished the first half with nine points, while
Antonio Manns, Jr. was the leading scorer with 15 points. Manns also had eight rebounds at thebreak.
Once again Lazenby put up the first Aggie points in the second half with a jump shot off Caleb Whitman's assist. The Aggies maintained a close distance and pulled to within one point of the lead (60-61) at the 11:04 mark thanks to a three from
Payson Slater with an assist from Manns. The crowd erupted a minute later when Lazenby tied the game at 63-63 with another long distance shot. The Jets didn't flinch and gradually gained a ten-point lead by the 5minute mark.
The Aggies worked the boards hard but couldn't pull ahead and took a 77-91 loss despite the great effort. In a serendipitous moment, as Lazenby was the first to score for the Aggies, he was also the last to score, grabbing a last-chance layup in the final seconds of the game; he finished with 21 points.
Antonio Manns, Jr. tied the lead with Lazenby in scoring and earned his first double-double of the season with 21 points and an impressive 16 rebounds. Manns also contributed a season-high in assists with four. For the Jets, Cortrael Colbert was the game-high scorer totaling 31 points; teammate James Pegues also earned a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds on the game.
The Aggies move to 3-18 overall and own one Heartland Conference win; Newman is now 11-8 overall with seven wins in the conference.Coach
Jerry Olson was pleases with his team's effort and felt the Aggies played and competed very hard. "We blocked out and rebounded better, but they (Newman) got a lot of loose balls. We had some really bad turnovers, unforced, for points that went the other way. It's also hard to win when you give up 49 free-throw attempts," said Olson after the game. Newman capitalized on their opportunities at the line scoring 35 points in free-throws alone.
The Aggies will look forward to another game in Goodwell this weekend as they prepare for Homecoming and continue conference play against Oklahoma Christian University; the men will play Saturday, Feb. 7 with tip-off set for 3 p.m. The OPSU Staff Liaison Committee will hold a silent auction prior to the women's game which begins at 1 p.m. with bidding taking place through halftime of the men's game; Homecoming royalty will be crowned during halftime of the men's game as well. Another Pink-Out game is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 19 with proceeds supporting Jennifer Lazenby's battle with breast cancer.
