Box Score 3 Wichita, Kan.—The Aggie baseball team added another Heartland Conference win to their record this weekend after a three-game series with Newman University.
Newman grabbed wins in games one and three of the series defeating OPSU 5-2 in seven innings in game one and taking game three in eight innings with a ten-run win 14-4. The Aggies came together in game two for an 8-2 victory over the Jets.
The Jets held the Aggies to two hits and zero runs through the first four innings in game two of Friday's double-header. Sam Beattie got the start on the mound for OPSU and pitched 3.2 innings keeping the Jets scoreless in the first two innings of play. Newman came through with two runs in the third and one in the fourth prompting a pitching change for the Aggies;
Adrian Lopez entered with two outs and picked off a runner at first for the final out.
Three runs came across for the Aggies in the fifth inning to tie the game at three all: Chris McClendon brought in one RBI with a single and Nick Zieniuk singled for two RBI. Lopez stayed in through the seventh inning giving up just four hits and one run. With the Aggies down 3-4 freshman Johnny Mireles took the mound for the eighth inning and held the Jets to two hits and one run giving the Jets a 5-3 lead going into the ninth. The Aggies came on strong with five runs in the ninth;
Lucas Ogaz and Zieniuk each hit two-run singles and
Jason Cox was brought in on a wild pitch to bring the score to 8-5 with OPSU in the lead.
B.J. Henry came in to close out the inning and earned his second save of the season allowing just one run in two hits. Mireles took the 8-6 win for the Aggies, his first. Joe Cannady took the loss for Newman with three hits, four runs and zero outs.
Walker Rainwater took the loss for OPSU in game one on Friday, getting the start and pitching 4.2 innings with seven hits for four runs. The Aggies kept things under control allowing zero runs in the first three innings. OPSU was also held scoreless until Sam Moreno hit a single in the fourth to score the first run of the game. The Jets added one run of their own in the fourth and the Aggies would answer with a run at the top of the fifth when Ogaz hit a sac fly to bring McClendon in from third base who reached on a big triple to right-center. Rainwater was replaced by
Brett Nasello with two outs in the bottom of the fifth after giving up three runs to put the Jets up 4-2. Nasello would allow one run in the sixth. The Aggies failed to bring runners across in the seventh which brought the game to an end with a 5-2 win for the Jets. Rainwater got the loss for OPSU and Newman's Lucas Schauer earned the win in seven innings with five hits, two runs and seven strikeouts.
Newman heated up for Saturday's series finale scoring 14 runs on 15 hits while keeping the Aggies to four runs. Cody Fredericksen earned his second win for the Jets in 5.2 innings of work. He gave up nine hits for three runs and tossed five strikeouts. The Aggie runs came by way of a single by Zieniuk in the third which brought in Ogaz who doubled to reach base; McClendon, with another triple, brought in Moreno in the sixth and Ogaz followed up with a single bringing McClendon through;
Nick Crosswhite crossed home plate in the seventh on a single by Moreno for the final Aggie run.
Zack Tingen took the loss for OPSU in 3.0 innings allowing six hits and three runs.
Scott Cutright,
Brayden Schuler, Dallas Guererro and
Patrick Gonzales all saw time on the mound for the Aggies.
OPSU holds an overall record of 3-17 and a Heartland Conference record of 2-4. The Aggies will travel to Alamosa, Colo. Tuesday, March 18 for a single game against Adams State; first pitch will be 2 p.m. MST.
