Adams State Bests Aggie Baseball

Box Score Alamosa, Colo.—OPSU Baseball added a single game against Adams State to their schedule and now sits 1-3 against the Grizzlies for the season after suffering a 4-17 loss Tuesday afternoon.

The two teams met up earlier in the season for a competitive three-game series in Goodwell that saw the Grizzlies get by with the first two wins by a combined three runs. The Aggies got the last word with a one-run victory in game three.

Tuesday's match-up in Alamosa belonged to Adams State from start to finish. The Aggies started with a lead-off single by Lucas Ogaz who was advanced to second on a sac bunt by Jason Cox and then reached third on a balk. Ogaz was brought in on a ground-out by Nicolas Zieniuk to give the Aggies a 1-0 lead early in the game. The Grizzlies scored three runs at the bottom of the first to pull ahead 3-1.

Ogaz hit s big triple to right-center in the third inning and was then brought home on a single by Cox to narrow the Grizzlies' lead to one run. Adams answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning and the score climbed to 7-2 in favor of the home team.

The Aggies would score two more runs in the fourth; the first on a single by Collin Smith and the second off a sac fly by Payton Osbon. Those would be the last Aggie runners to cross home plate as Adams held them to three hits for zero runs through the remaining five innings. The Grizzlies went on to score five runs in the fourth, two in the sixth and three in the eight to end with a 17-4 win over OPSU.

Aggie pitcher Adrian Lopez took the loss in 2.1 innings on the mound; Lopez started the game and gave up six hits for seven runs (five earned). Michael Mendoza, Brett Nasello, Chase Graf, Patrick Gonzales and Jonny Mireles each served time on the mound for OPSU; the pitching crew combined for 12 hits, 10 runs and two strikeouts on the game. Anthony Parise earned the win for Adams State pitching 3.0 innings with five hits, two earned runs and four strikeouts.

Sam Moreno led the Aggies in hitting going three for three with one run; Lucas Ogaz was two for three on the game with two runs and, senior Jordan Sprouse went two for two at the plate. The Aggies totaled 12 hits with one triple (Ogaz).

With the loss the Aggies drop to 3-18 on the season and will continue their road trip with a double-header Wednesday against Colorado Christian. The team returns to their home field this weekend for a three-game Heartland Conference series against top-ranked St. Mary's University. St. Mary's is currently undefeated in the conference and sits with an 18-4 overall record.
